Calabrese Pitches 2nd Straight Shutout as Bentley Gains Split with Assumption

WALTHAM, Mass. – Sophomore right hander Lauren Calabrese (Cave Creek, Ariz./Boulder Creek HS) pitched her second straight shutout to lead Bentley University to a 3-0 game two victory over Assumption College in Northeast-10 Conference Northeast Division softball Wednesday afternoon on the Bentley softball field.

Calabrese's strong showing earned the Falcons a split of the twinbill as the two teams traded shutouts. In the opener, the Greyhounds rode the pitching of sophomore Mia Nowicki (Chelsea) to a 5-0 victory.

Two of Bentley's three runs were scored in the first inning. After leadoff hitter and junior left fielder Stacey Korotsky (Raynham/Bridgewater-Raynham HS) reached on an error, she scored on a double to center from sophomore shortstop Lindsey Allen (Worcester/Worcester Technical HS). Following a ground out, freshman catcher Ella Hillier (Tualitin, Ore./Tualitin HS) picked up her team-leading 22nd RBI with a single.

Bentley picked up an insurance run in the fifth when Hillier doubled to left and scored on a single in the same direction by junior center fielder Juliana Romeo (Greenville, R.I./Smithfield HS).

Bentley's seven hits included two apiece from Hillier, Romeo and junior second baseman Julie Slavin (Rocky Hill, Conn./Rocky Hill HS).

Calabrese limited the Greyhounds to four hits and finished with two walks and a strikeout. She allowed only one runner to reach third and was helped by a pair of double plays.

In the opener, it was Nowicki who excelled from the center circle. She allowed five hits and three walks while striking out five. Her teammates supported her with two runs in the third, one in the fourth and two more in the seventh.

The Assumption offense featured a pair of home runs, a solo shot to left by senior catcher Victoria Petrie (Marlborough) in the fourth and a two-run round tripper from junior centerfielder Kayla Peabody (Mendon) in the seventh.

Korotsky and junior third baseman Kaileigh Serafini (Schenectady, N.Y./Schenectady HS) each had two hits for Bentley.

Bentley, 15-20 overall and 7-7 Northeast Division, remained in a three-way tie for fourth place in the division. Assumption slipped to 20-15 overall and 9-5 in divisional action.

Bentley will play a weather-adjusted three-game series at St. Michael's College. The revised schedule begins with a 10 am doubleheader on Friday.
