Quartet of Juniors Named Captains for 2019 Bentley Softball Team

WALTHAM, Mass. – A quartet of juniors will serve as captains for the senior-less 2019 Bentley University varsity softball team, head coach Terry M. Prouty announced.

Two of the four are outfielders, Stacey Korotsky (Raynham/Bridgewater-Raynham HS) and Juliana Romeo (Greenville, R.I./Smithfield HS), and the other two, Julie Slavin (Rocky Hill, Conn./ Rocky Hill HS) and Gabby Casalino (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills West HS), are infielders.

Korotsky received second-team All-Northeast-10 honors last spring after hitting a team-best .328 with her 32 hits included two doubles and a triple. She scored 18 runs, drove in 11, reached base 38 percent of the time and was solid defensively in left.

Romeo hit .265 last spring with 35 hits. 15 runs scored and 11 RBI. She homered four times, becoming the first Falcon with that many since 1994. She has patrolled center for the Falcons the last two years, making only three errors in 151 chances.

Slavin, who split time between second and short last season, is coming off a strong year at the plate in which she hit .323 with nine extra base hits among her team-best 43 total hits. She scored a team-leading 19 runs and had 15 RBI. She also did a nice job defensively with only eight errors in 42 contests.

Casalino saw her sophomore season prematurely ended by illness, but is expected to be an asset this season at first and third. One of her strengths is her stretch ability at first, which will help create a number of outs.

Bentley, 15-27 last year, opens its season with a three-game series at Rollins College this weekend. The two teams will play a doubleheader Saturday and a single game Sunday.
