Adelphi Slugs Past Bentley, 9-0 & 3-0

WALTHAM, Mass. – All-America third baseman Brenna Martini (Fairfield, Conn.) and junior Nicole Camera (Metuchen, N.J.) hit back-to-back homers in the opener and Camera also went deep in the nightcap as Adelphi University blanked Bentley University, 9-0 and 3-0, in Northeast-10 Conference women's softball Saturday afternoon at Bentley. The opener was stopped after six innings.

That was more than enough for a trio of Panther pitchers who combined to limit the Falcons to a total of five hits in the twinbill. Senior Lindsay Mapes (Centerburg, Ohio) and sophomore Jessica Vadala (Garden City Park, N.Y.) combined on a two-hitter in the opener while Vadala and Camera teamed for a three-hitter in the nightcap.

Vadala, who was credited with the win in both, pitched a total of eight scoreless innings. She allowed one hit in three innings in the opener and did the same in five innings in game two.

Adelphi (20-11-1, 11-4 NE10) seized control of game one with four runs in the third. Sophomore catcher Nikki Cuccio (Dingmans Ferry, Pa.) had an RBI single, Martini followed with her 12th home run of the season and Camera also cleared the fences.

The Panthers added three more in the fourth, pushing the lead to 7-0, with Cuccio (2-run single) and Martini (RBI single) driving in the runs.

In the first inning of game two, Martini had a two-out triple to right and Camera followed with a homer to left. She also had an RBI double in the third inning to complete the scoring.

For the doubleheader, Cuccio was 4-for-8 with 2 runs scored and 3 RBI, Martini was 5-for-7 with 2 runs and 3 RBI, and Camera 4-for-5 with 4 RBI and 2 runs.

Bentley senior left fielder Kelsey Kennedy (Bedford, N.H./Bedford HS), who leadthe team with a .400 batting average, was on base twice with a single and a walk, and also made an outstanding diving catch in the outfield.

Bentley will be back at home Sunday afternoon, hosting Pace University in a doubleheader that starts at noon.
