Borrelli Drives in 3 as Bentley Tops St. Michael’s, 8-1

WALTHAM, Mass. – In her final career home game, Bentley University senior shortstop Alex Borrelli (Salem, N.H./Central Catholic HS) drove in three runs as the Falcons posted an 8-1 win over St. Michael's College in Northeast-10 Conference Northeast Division softball Wednesday afternoon.

Bentley, which completed its home schedule with an 8-3 record, took advantage of a pair of Purple Knight errors to score three times in the first inning with Borrelli involved in all three.

Sophomore right fielder Stephanie McQuaid (Windham, N.H./Austin Prep) opened the bottom of the first by reaching second on an outfield error. One out later, junior left fielder Kelsey Kennedy (Bedford, N.H./Bedford HS) was hit by a pitch. The two advanced on a successful double steal, and both scored on an infield single by Borrelli off the second baseman's glove.

Later in the inning, senior first baseman Morgan Mazone (Selkirk, N.Y./Bethlehem Central HS) singled to left, and when the ball was misplayed, Borrelli scored all the way from first base.

Bentley (13-19, 9-9 NE-10 Northeast) opened the game up with two runs in the fifth and three more in the sixth inning, with both McQuaid (3 runs) and sophomore second baseman Catie Noons (North Dighton/Dighton-Rehoboth Reg. HS) scoring in both frames. The fifth saw Borrelli pick up an RBI on a fielder's choice and junior right fielder Chelsea Vena (Matawan, N.J./Saint John Vianney HS) hit a sacrifice fly.

Noons had a two-run double in the sixth and scored the Falcons' final run on a single by Kennedy.

Winning pitcher Kelsey Smith (Jaffrey, N.H./Conant HS) worked into the sixth inning to notch her fifth win of the season, and 13th in 20 career decisions. Senior Kelly Ferris (Seymour, Conn./ Seymour HS) came on for her ninth career save, extending her school record, and retired six of the seven batters she faced with four strikeouts.

Kennedy and Borrelli, Bentley's top hitters for the season, each had two hits while junior right fielder Caroline Staples (Stoughton) was 3-for-3 for St. Michael's (3-29, 1-16 NE-10 Northeast).

Bentley, which moved into a tie for fourth in the Northeast, will wrap up its regular season schedule this weekend with three games against division-leading Southern New Hampshire, beginning Friday night at 6 pm.
