Smith Pitches Bentley Past Bridgeport, 3-1; Falcons Fall in Extras to Minot State

CLERMONT, Fla. – Bentley University junior lefty Kelsey Smith (Jaffrey, N.H./Conant HS) pitched a four-hitter to lead the Falcons to a 3-1 win over the University of Bridgeport in non-conference softball at the National Training Center Monday evening.

In the team's second game of the night, Bentley dropped a 1-0 decision to Minot State University in eight innings to fall to 1-5 on its ten-game trip to the Sunshine State.

After giving up a run in the third inning, Smith yielded only one hit over the game's final four innings while striking out five and walking three. She also helped herself offensively by scoring what proved to be the winning run.

In the bottom of the third, junior left fielder Kelsey Kennedy (Bedford, N.H./Bedford HS) drew a one-out walk. Smith followed with a single to right, Kennedy moved up to third on a fly ball out, and Kennedy scored the tying run on a fielders' choice hit by junior third baseman Katelyn LeBreux (Biddeford, Maine/Biddeford HS).

Senior first baseman Morgan Mazone (Selkirk, N.Y./Bethlehem Central HS) followed with an RBI single to left, bringing in Smith for a 2-1 lead.

Bentley added an insurance run in the fourth when junior center fielder Chelsea Vena (Matawan, N.J./Saint John Vianney HS) doubled and scored on a single by Kennedy.

Bentley also received a quality pitching performance from senior lefty Kelly Ferris (Seymour, Conn./Seymour HS) in the Minot game. She allowed six hits with two walks and four strikeouts before giving up a run in the eighth.

With the international tiebreaker in effect, the Beavers began the bottom of the eighth with junior Jordan Grant (Adelanto, Calif.) on second. Freshman first baseman Lauren Cowden (Moorpark, Calif.) led off with a single to left center, driving in Grant with the winning run and handing their Falcons their third one-run loss of the trip.

Sophomore right fielder Stephanie McQuaid (Windham, N.H./Austin Prep) had two of Bentley's three hits as the Sacred Heart transfer raised her average to .450.

Tuesday's schedule has a rematch with Minot State and a 1 pm encounter with Philadelphia University.
