Bentley Wins Twice as Taitz & Ferris Post Back-to-Back Shutouts

CLERMONT,  Fla. – Grad student Carly Taitz (Blue Point, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point HS) pitched a two-hit shutout against the University of Bridgeport and sophomore Kelly Ferris (Seymour, Conn./ Seymour HS) followed with a three-hit shutout against Alderson-Broaddus College as the Bentley University softball team made it four wins in its last five games Thursday at the National Training Center.

The Falcons, 4-4 with two games left on their Florida trip, topped 4-7 Bridgeport 8-0 in a game stopped after five innings and registered a 3-0 victory over the 5-14 Battlers.

Taitz, in her five innings of work, struck out two and allowed only five base runners, with only one getting as far as second. Ferris finished with two walks and six strikeouts, and she retired 13 of the final 14 batters she faced.

Taitz was supported with single runs in the first two innings and three runs in both the third and the fourth. Sophomore shortstop Alex Borrelli (Salem, N.H./Central Catholic HS) powered the offense with two hits and three RBI, and senior centerfielder Jackie Gauthier (Braintree, Mass./Braintree HS) drove in two runs.

Both freshman designated player Chelsea Vena (Matawan, N.J./Saint John Vianney HS) and grad student Laura McDonough (Braintree, Mass./Braintree HS) scored twice for the Falcons.

In the first inning game two, junior left fielder Shannon Connor (West Haven, Conn./West Haven HS) doubled to left and scored on a two-bagger by Borrelli.

The Falcons added two unearned runs in the fourth with both Gauthier and freshman right fielder Kelsey Kennedy (Bedford, N.H./Bedford HS) crossing home plate.

Bentley concludes its 2014 trip to Florida Friday with games against Northwood (Mich.) at 9 am and New York Tech (11 am).
