Malloy Shutout Completes New Haven Sweep of Bentley, 7-2 and 2-0

WALTHAM, Mass. --  Junior second baseman Lucy Francisco (Lawrence) hit a three-run double to break a 2-2 tie in the seventh inning of the opener and sophomore lefty Kelsey Malloy (Clarksburg) pitched a two-hit shutout in the nightcap as the University of New Haven swept Bentley University, 7-2 and 2-0, in Northeast-10 Conference softball at Bentley Friday afternoon.

Bentley took a short-lived lead in the first inning of game one. Sophomore center fielder Jackie Gauthier (Braintree/Braintree HS) drew a one-out walk, took second on a two-out single by junior second baseman Laura McDonough (Braintree/Braintree HS) and scored the game's first run on a single by junior catcher Megan Blier (Wells, Maine/Wells HS).

New Haven came back with two runs in the top of the second. Sophomore shortstop Brandy Dianno (Philadelphia, Pa.) had an RBI single and senior left fielder Shannon Angehr (Levittown, N.Y.) was the recipient of a bases loaded walk.

It stayed a 2-1 game until the Bentley half of the sixth inning. Sophomore third baseman Kelly Sanborn (Hopkinton/Hopkinton HS) led off with a single, was sacrificed to second and scored the tying run on a triple to center by sophomore right fielder Chelsea Tamuk (Port Jefferson, N.Y/Earl L. Vandermeulen HS).

The Chargers came right back in their next at bat, loading the bases on an error, an infield single and a walk. Francisco cleared them all with her second hit of the game, her three-bagger to center quickly making it a 5-2 game.

Junior righty Alana Wesche (Oxford, Conn.) picked up her 16th win in 25 decisions for New Haven with a complete-game seven-hitter. Freshman Caitlin Betz (Randolph, N.J./Randolph HS), who turned in a pair of complete game efforts for the Falcons, struck out four in game one to become only the third player in Bentley history to record 100 strikeouts in a season. Her two K's in the nightcap pushed her total to 102.

Game two saw New Haven pick up two runs in the first, add an insurance run in the fourth and break it open with four in the fifth inning. Freshman designated player Gilly Childs played a key role with two hits and two RBI, and seven different players scored a run for the Chargers (27-19, 17-13 NE-10).

Malloy struck out seven and walked two en route to her shutout.

Bentley (8-28, 6-22 NE-10) closes out its season Saturday with a 12 noon doubleheader against conference-leading Southern Connecticut State.
