Andrews, Leo Help Adelphi Take 2 from Bentley, 6-2 & 4-2

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – Sophomore designated player Katie Andrews (Dothan, Ala.) had a pair of two-run doubles in the opener and junior shortstop Jeanine Leo (Staten Island, N.Y.) drove in two runs in the nightcap as Adelphi University swept visiting Bentley University, 6-2 and 4-2, in Northeast-10 Conference softball Saturday afternoon at Janet L. Ficke Field.

Bentley got off to a positive start to the day, striking for two in the first inning of the opener. After infield singles by junior left fielder Erica Thibodeau (Cohoes, N.Y./Shaker HS) and junior second baseman Laura McDonough (Braintree, Mass./Braintree HS), an error allowed Thibodeau to score the game's first run. Sophomore first baseman Stephanie Tierney (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham HS) followed with a single up the middle, McDonough scoring on the play to make it a 2-0 game.

Adelphi cut the lead in half with a sacrifice fly by Leo in the second and turned the one-run deficit into a 3-2 advantage on Andrews' two-out double to center. Both runs were unearned by virtue of two Falcon errors earlier in the inning.

The Panthers added to their lead with a single run in the fourth and completed the scoring on Andrews' two-run double to right center in the fifth.

Game two was scoreless until Adelphi (16-9-1, 7-3 NE-10) struck for three runs in the bottom of the fourth. Leo played a key role in the inning, knocking in the Panthers' second run with a triple and scoring the third on a single by freshman left fielder Kayla Rieger (Anacortes, Wash.).

Bentley answered with two runs in the fifth, both senior designated player Megan Blier (Wells, Maine/Wells HS) and sophomore center fielder Jackie Gauthier (Braintree, Mass./Braintree HS) scoring on a double to left center by Thibodeau.

Adelphi, which received 11 strikeouts from junior Laurin Watts (Gardendale, Ala.), added insurance with an RBI double by Leo in the sixth.

Blier had two hits for Bentley in the nightcap and both Thibodeau and McDonough had one hit in each game.

Bentley (3-15, 1-9 NE-10) will remain in the Empire State for a Sunday doubleheader at Pace University.
