Bentley Men Open Outdoor Season at Bridgewater; Lawes Takes 1st in 400 Hurdles

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – Bentley University freshman Alex Lawes (Brick, N.J./Brick Township HS), in his outdoor debut as a collegian, placed first in the 400 meter hurdles during the Bridgewater State Bears Invitational Saturday.

Lawes won the race in 56.89 seconds, a time that ranks fifth on Bentley's all-time list. Also in the event, Falcon sophomore Evan Bean (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenedehowa HS) was third in 1:01.60.

Lawes was also part of Bentley's 4x400 meter relay team that was third of 15 in 3:31.82. In addition to Lawes, the quartet included seniors Joey Wix (Granby, Conn./Granby Memorial HS) and Devin Wendel (Westfield, N.J./Westfield HS), as well as freshman Hayden Pike (South Weymouth/Weymouth HS).

The latter three were among the top seven in the 400, an event in which 25 student-athletes competed. Wix was fifth in 52.71, Wendel sixth in 52.84 and Pike seventh in 53.31.

86 runners competed in the 1500 and Bentley had three of the top ten. Junior Brice Tolan (Abington/Abington HS) was third in 4:03.91, freshman Sam Capobianco (North Reading/North Reading HS) fifth (4:05.80) and junior Jack Deehan (Westwood/Westwood HS) was ninth (4:11.15).

In the 3,000-meter steeplechase, junior Nick Ondr (Ozark, Mo./Glendale HS) was second and sophomore Finn Power (East Lyme, Conn./East Lyme HS) was third. They finished in 10:41.64 and 11:03.04, respectively.

Bentley was sixth of 17 in the 4x100 with sophomore Ryan Dennehy (Andover/Andover HS) and junior Jonathan Solimine (Braintree/Braintree HS) combining with freshmen Kenan Fong (Whitman/Whitman-Hanson Reg. HS) and Jared Podrazik (Ashburnham/Oakmont Reg. HS) to finish in 45.29.

Next up for the Falcons is the Bryant Invitational next Friday and Saturday.
