Bentley Falls to Adelphi 4-2 in First Round of NE10 Championships

Flushing, N.Y. – The No. 4 seed Adelphi defeated the No. 5 seed Bentley University 4-2 in the first round of the Northeast-10 Men's Tennis Championships on Saturday. The match was played at the USTA National Tennis Center in Flushing, New York.

Adelphi won the doubles point, meaning Bentley had to overcome a 1-0 deficit in singles. Bentley won the No. 2 and No. 3 matches and was leading the No. 6 match in the third set, but Adelphi clinched the match by winning No. 5 singles.

In doubles, Bentley's team in No. 3 of graduate student Kendall Au (Essex Fells, N.J./West Essex) and senior Connor Aulson (Groveland, Mass./Pentucket) defeated Adelphi's Luke Stirling and Andrew Ray, 6-3.

The No. 2 doubles match was extremely close, contested between Bentley's Max Bonte (Bradenton, Fla./St. Stephens) and Jordan Soifer (Stamford, Conn./Westhill) against Adelphi's Pietro Sole and Saloman Arce Lema. The match went to a tiebreak tied 6-6, but Adelphi's team won the match in the tiebreak, 7-5.

The Panthers No. 1 pairing in doubles of Gabriel Balestero and Valentin Maier defeated Bentley's Maurcio Fadul (Miami, Fla.) and Alex Novins (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley), 6-2.

Bentley won the first singles match that finished when Bonte defeated Sole in No. 2, 6-4, 5-0.

Adelphi took a 2-1 lead when Balestero defeated Aulson in No. 1, by a 6-1, 6-4 score. But Bentley tied it 2-2 after Novins defeated Maier in the No. 3 match in two sets, 6-3, 7-6 (7-5).

The No. 4 match went Adelphi's way when Stirling defeated Soifer 6-1, 7-6 (7-4) for a 3-2 lead. The Panthers were then able to clinch the match when Arce Lema defeated Fadul in a tough match in No. 5, 6-4, 6-3.

Falcons freshman Gabe Horowitz (Lake Oswego, Ore./Lake Oswego) was leading Adelphi's Henrique Souza in No. 6, 6-1, 1-6, 3-2 when Adelphi clinched the match.

The Panthers move on to the semifinals on Tuesday, where they will meet the top seed Le Moyne.
