Bentley Gears Up for NCAA Tournament Duel With Merrimack

WALTHAM, Mass. – For the third time in just over two weeks, Northeast-10 rivals Bentley and Merrimack will take to the courts, only this time with the stakes higher than in the previous two meetings. The two squads will meet in the NCAA Division II Men's Tennis East Regional No. 1 on Sunday at 10:00 a.m. at North Andover High School.

The Falcons (15-6), seeded fifth in the East Region, are making their fourth consecutive trip to the NCAAs and sixth since 2006. Merrimack (17-7) is making its fifth straight trip to the NCAAs and is seeded fourth in the region after winning its first ever NE-10 Tournament title over Bentley 5-1 on Saturday.

The winner will take on the region's top-seed and champion of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference, Concordia (N.Y.) (17-7), on Monday at 10:00 a.m. The winner of that match will head to 16-team NCAA Championships, which will be held May 16-19 in Louisville, Ky.

In the East Region No. 2 bracket, second-seeded Queens (N.Y.) (18-3), champion of the East Coast Conference, takes on seventh-seeded So. New Hampshire. The other match in that bracket pits ECC schools District of Columbia (16-4), seeded third, against sixth-seeded NYIT (11-11). Those two matches take place on Saturday at So. New Hampshire, with the winners facing off on Sunday for a trip to Louisville as well.

The Falcons, who are an impressive 31-2 in NE-10 regular season matches over the last three seasons and won the 2010 and 2011 NE-10 titles, have won their first round match in the NCAAs the last two years. They beat Stonehill 5-0 in 2010 before falling to Queens, and topped So. New Hampshire 5-0 in 2011 before being eliminated by Queens again in the next round.

Bentley will enter the regional with a talented roster that placed a conference-best seven players on the NE-10 All-Conference teams.

Headlining that group are juniors Lucas Wever (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Chapel School) and Rodrigo Ribeiro (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Chapel School), who garnered second team selections in first and third flight singles, respectively. Wever is 9-6 on the year in singles overall, while Ribeiro has posted a 17-7 mark. Senior Alec Spycher (Sarasota, Fla./Saint Stephens Episcopal) and sophomore Andrew Waddington (Granby, Conn./Granby Memorial) were picked to the first team in fifth and sixth singles, respectively.

On the other side, Merrimack counters with six All-Conference selections, led by junior Petar Golijanin, who was named to the first team in both singles and doubles. Four others, senior Max Eppley, freshman Vince Bellino, senior Sean Pahler and junior Chris Toegemann were named to the second team in singles.
