WALTHAM, Mass. – The Bentley University men's and women's swimming and diving teams will be in Worcester this weekend at Worcester Polytechnic Institute for the 2023 Northeast-10 Conference Championships with both teams harboring high expectations. Action will get underway Thursday and will continue through Sunday, and can be viewed on the NE10 NOW Digital Network (www.NE10NOW.tv).

According to a pre-championship poll of conference coaches, both Bentley teams are slim favorites with each voted first by a single point. The women's team received half of the eight first place votes and edged 14-time champion Southern Connecticut, 46-45. The Falcon men, who have claimed three of the last five championships, garnered four of the seven firsts and also edged Southern by the slimmest of margins, 34-33.

Last year, both Bentley teams finished second to Southern Connecticut, which was competing in its home pool. The Falcons claimed 19 golds among the 42 events with the men's team winning nine (three individual, six relay) and the women ten , including eight individual.

Current Bentley swimmers and divers previously have stood on the podium 69 times, collecting 28 golds, 23 silvers and 18 bronze. That list includes 14 medals, with six golds, for senior Kate Galvin (Suffern, N.Y./Suffern HS), 11 with three golds for classmate Dariana Gonzales (Stamford, Conn./Westhill HS) and 10 for senior and five-time NE10 champion Anthony Vizental (Concord, Calif./Clayton Valley HS).

Senior Mary Huminski (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand HS), twice the Northeast-10 Women's Diver of the Year and NE10 Women's Diver of the Meet, is the two-time defending champion off both diving boards. Her top competition could come from her sophomore teammate Hilla Almog (Wayland/Wayland HS), last year's runner-up on the one-meter.

Galvin is the reigning champion in the 50, 100 and 200-yard freestyle events while junior Andrew Matjucha (Randolph, N.J./Randolph HS) and junior Emma Hapkiewicz (South Windsor, Conn./South Windsor HS) combined to win five of the six distance free events last year. Matjucha swept the men's 500, 1000 and 1650 while Hapkiewicz is the defending champ in the 1000 and 1650, both of which she won in meet-record times. She was also the runner-up in the 500 last February.

Other reigning champions for coach Mary Kay Samko's Falcons are sophomore Jordan Nuzback (Fairview, Pa./McDowell HS) in the women's 200 individual medley and Vizental in the 200 butterfly.

In the women's 800 free relay, Bentley will be looking for its seventh consecutive gold medal. Gonzales, Galvin and Hapkiewicz were all part of last year's winning quartet.

A look at the psych sheet shows that Bentley has the top qualifying performance in 18 events, including 14 of 21 women's events. At the top of the list are Galvin in the 50 and 100 free, Hapkiewicz in the 500 and 1650 free, Nuzback in the 200 IM, Huminski in the one-meter, Almog in the three-meter, Gonzales in the 200 free, freshman Taylor White (Warwick, Bermuda/Warwick Academy) in the 100 backstroke, freshman Caroline Ubert (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington HS) in the 100 butterfly and freshman Morgan Kingsley (Cazenovia, N.Y./Cazenovia HS) in the 200 breaststroke.

For the men, Vizental is the top qualifier in the 100 fly and senior Ryan Looney (Wilton, Conn./Wilton HS) in the 50 free.

Bentley also has the top qualifying performance in five of the ten relays.

Action will get underway at 6 pm Thursday with the women's three-meter diving prelims, the 800 yard free relay and the 1000 freestyle.
