Chan & Ouellette Lead Bentley During Day 1 of NEISDA Championships

WHITE RIVER JUNCTION. Vt. -- Senior Egen Ouellette (West Hartford, Conn./Conard HS) and freshman Phillip Chan (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier HS) each reached the medal platform three times Friday while competing for the Bentley University men's swimming team in the New England Swimming and Diving Association Championships at the Upper Valley Aquatic Center.

Chan finished second in the 50 yard breaststroke with a time of 27.87 seconds, and Ouellette was third in the 100 butterfly. His time of 51.18 in the 100 fly broke his own school record by 0.97 seconds and was an NCAA "B" performance.

Both swimmers were also part of two Bentley relays that earned medals. The Falcons' 200 free relay team, which also included freshman Steve Sylvia (Westerly, R.I./Westerly HS) and senior Matt Cesaro (Avon, Conn./Avon HS), was second in 1:26.68. In the 400 medley relay, Chan and Ouellette teamed with Sylvia and sophomore George Go (Manila, Philippines) for a third-place finish, with a time of 3:37.07.

Bentley also received a third from sophomore Tyler Champagne (Orange, Conn./Amity Reg. HS) in the 500 freestyle (4:48.60) and a fourth from junior Patrick Ryan (Sudbury/Lincoln-Sudbury Reg. HS) in the 200 backstroke (1:59.88).

In the team standings, Bentley is second of 13 teams with 287 points, 78 better than third-place Roger Williams. Two-time defending champion Keene State is way in front with 428.

The three-day meet will run through Sunday evening.
