Men’s Soccer Drops a Tough One to Adelphi, 3-1

WALTHAM, Mass. – Men's soccer fought hard but dropped a tough 3-1 decision to Adelphi on Wednesday afternoon.

Trailing 2-0 in the 2nd half, freshman Zach Spitznagle scored his first career goal in the 75th minute to pull Bentley closer.

The goal started with a long throw-in by Michael Haikal into Bentley's 18-yard box. Luke Mollenhauer got his head to it in the six-yard box and the ball fell to Spitznagle, who volleyed his shot through traffic and past Adelphi's keeper for the goal.

Bentley pressed ahead for the equalizer over the final 15 minutes but couldn't quite find it. A throw-in with 25 seconds left in the attacking end which Haikal took presented one last opportunity. But with all 11 men forward, Adelphi gained possession and scored on the open net with seven seconds remaining.

The first half was scoreless despite some good chances for Bentley and an 8-2 edge in shots. Four of those shots required saves from Panthers keeper Daniel De La Heras.

But Adelphi took a 1-0 lead in the 60th minute on a goal by Benji Jones, then added to it in the 68th minute with a strike by Callum Walmsley.

Falcons keeper Joe Griffin finished the match with five saves.

Bentley's next match is on Saturday at Saint Anselm.
