Bentley Drops Heartbreaker to Adelphi 4-3 in Overtime

WALTHAM, Mass. – Bentley and Adelphi combined for a seven-goal thriller on Tuesday afternoon, but it was the Panthers that came away with a 4-3 victory in overtime.

After a scoreless first half that stretched into the 50th minute, the game came to life when junior Chad Meyers (East Northport, N.Y./St. Anthony's) scored for the second straight game, with Connor Mote (Lisle, Ill./Benet) on the assist. Meyers made a run down the right-hand side into the penalty area, and after the ball took a deflection off an Adelphi defender, he volleyed in a shot on the near post for the goal.

Mote then scored himself four minutes later with a brilliantly chipped effort from about 35 yards out to give Bentley a 2-0 lead. The goal was set up after Ronan Fitzpatrick (Coventry, Conn./East Catholic) played a long through-ball from Bentley's defensive half to spring Mote loose, and he chipped a shot over the Adelphi keeper who had charged out.

But the game turned after each team received a red card in the 61st minute, meaning both teams played the rest of the match a man-down.

Adelphi's Rodrigo Descalzo Rocca scored two straight goals to tie the match up, first in the 65th minute and then in the 71st to tie the match 2-2.

The match took another twist when Adelphi went ahead 3-2 in the 83rd minute on a goal by Filippo Peri.

But there was yet another momentum shift when Bentley fought back and scored the tying goal off the foot of junior Patrick McMahon (Kingston, Mass./Silver Lake) just over a minute later. Bentley won the ball back in the defensive half from Hunter Marshall (Harwinton, Conn./Avon Old Farms). Grad student TJ Walker (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown) played a great through-ball over the top of Adelphi's defense to McMahon, who ran onto the pass and buried his shot past the Adelphi keeper from 20 yards out for his 5th goal of the season.

The match went to overtime tied 3-3, but Adelphi won it on a penalty kick by Paolo Marciano after Bentley was called for a foul in the penalty area.

The Falcons will next be in action on Friday night at 6:30 pm when they host Saint Rose on the football field for Senior Night.
