Fricke Goes for Hat Trick but Bentley Falls to NYIT 15-8
Waltham, Mass. – Senior Michael Fricke (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Valor) went for a hat trick, but the No. 20 ranked Bentley men's lacrosse team fell to NYIT 15-8 on Saturday afternoon.
Kris Campbell (Longmeadow, Mass./Longmeadow) and Matt Brooks (Brunswick, Maine/Philips Exeter) also had two goals. Brooks added three assists to lead the team with five points.
Fricke's third goal of the afternoon with 11:41 left in the 4th quarter was the culmination of a 3-0 Falcons run that began late in the 3rd quarter. That cut what was a four goal deficit for Bentley to 9-8. The goal, however, was Bentley's final of the afternoon.
The Bears (4-2) finished the game on a 6-0 run to pull away for the victory. Attackman Matt Murphy had three of the goals during the run, and he finished with a game high four goals.
Bentley led 3-2 after the first quarter, as Fricke found the back of the net twice. Joey Tesoriero (Huntington Station, N.Y./Half Hallow Hills) also rippled the twine with a goal at the 1:48 mark. Brooks assisted on each of the goals in the quarter.
Brooks scored the first goal of the second quarter, after more than eight minutes elapsed, to give Bentley a 4-2 lead. NYIT though proceeded to go on a 4-0 run over the next four-plus minutes. The run was ended when Campbell scored with 2:03 left in the quarter, with Tesoriero on the assist.
Campbell's goal got Bentley to within 6-5 at halftime.
NYIT scored the first three goals of the 3rd quarter to lead 9-5 with about seven minutes gone. But the Falcons closed the quarter strong. Brooks and Campbell scored just 24 seconds apart and Bentley trailed just 9-7 at the start of the 4th quarter.
Bentley (0-2) has a quick turnaround for its next game, which is Tuesday at 12:00 pm at Mercy College.
