Bentley Secures 11-8 Road Win over No. 17 Assumption

Worcester, Mass. – Senior attacker Alex Astarita (Bedford, N.H./Bishop Guertin) and junior goalie Michael Haggan (Braintree, Mass./B.C. High) led Bentley to a big road win over No. 17 ranked Assumption on Wednesday night by an 11-8 score.

Both teams came into the night tied in the NE10 standings with 4-2 records but the Falcons came away with the win.

Astarita had four goals and two assists to lead the offense, while Haggan made 13 saves.

Bentley got off to a slow start and trailed 3-0 after a goal by Assumption's Owen Peterson III at 8:15 of the 1st quarter. But Bentley did not allow another goal until the final seconds of the 2nd quarter, more than 22 minutes.

In that time Bentley scored six goals, three over the final seven minutes of the 1st quarter and three in the 2nd frame. Astarita had Bentley's first two goals, and senior Sam Hurley (Medfield, Mass./Medfield) scored with seven seconds left in the quarter.

In the 2nd quarter, Michael Fricke (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Valor), Matt Brooks (Brunswick, Maine/Phillips Exeter) and Kris Campbell (Longmeadow, Mass./Longmeadow) had the Bentley goals as they led 6-4 at halftime.

Neither team scored during the first seven minutes of the 3rd quarter, but Bentley kicked into gear with goals 1:26 apart, starting with a man-up strike by Astarita at 7:32, and followed by a goal by Walker Gautier (South Miami, Fla./Gulliver) for an 8-4 lead.

Assumption got back in it with two goals before the 3rd quarter ended, then answered an Astarita goal early in the 4th quarter with two straight, to cut the lead to 9-8 with 8:30 remaining.

But Bentley closed strong, and put the game away with two goals in a 48 second span. Senior Scott Carvalho (Wayland, Mass./Wayland) scored at 6:53, and Brooks found the back of the net at 6:05 for an 11-8 lead.

Bentley outshot Assumption 46-37 on the night and held them to just five shots in the 4th quarter. Nick Irby (Groton, Mass./Groton) won 13-22 face-offs and Connor Baughan (Foxborough, Mass./Portsmouth-Abbey) had a team high five ground balls.

The Falcons, who improved to 7-2 overall and 5-2 NE10 and have won four straight, host Saint Anselm on Saturday.
