Bentley Hangs Tough But Falls to Adelphi in NE-10 Quarters 6-4

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – Sixth-seeded Bentley hung tough to the very end, but a 4-0 Adelphi run over the third and fourth quarters was the difference as the third-seeded Panthers took a 6-4 victory in the quarterfinals of the Northeast-10 Men's Lacrosse Championships on Tuesday.

In a dramatic reversal of the game played between these two teams on Saturday that Adelphi won by 13, Bentley was there the whole way but came up just a bit short. Their season comes to an end at 5-9, while the Panthers (13-2) advance to the semifinals where they will face second-seeded Merrimack on Friday.

Bentley outshot Adelphi by a whopping margin of 47-22, but were flustered by the efforts of senior goalie Eric Janssen, who made 20 saves. The Falcons won the ground ball battle as well, 38-24.

Senior attack Brendan Grant (Walpole, Mass./Xaverian Brothers) gave Bentley a 1-0 lead at the 9:11 mark of the first quarter, and that stood up until Adelphi's senior attack Joe Vitale scored the first of his two goals on the day with just under six minutes gone in the second quarter to tie the score. The Panthers went into halftime leading 2-1 after a goal by Joe Celano with 5:11 left in the half.

Coming out of the locker rooms though, Bentley quickly tied the score on freshman Matt Dente's (Reading, Mass./Reading) third goal of the year 1:20 into the second half.

But unfortunately for the Falcons, that was their last goal for almost 24 minutes, bringing them into the later stages of the fourth quarter down 6-2. During that scoring drought, Adelphi got goals from Danny Blau and Kevin Kennedy eight seconds apart in the third quarter, and Vitale and Michael Rossi at the 5:43 and 4:30 marks of the fourth quarter.

Senior Justin Holmes (Brookfield, Conn./Berkshire School) brought Bentley to within 6-3 with 4:05 to go, and he scored again with 51 seconds left to make it 6-4, but that was the last goal of the game.
