GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – In the final game of the regular season, Bentley ran into a hot Adelphi team as the fifth-ranked Panthers came away with a 17-4 victory on Saturday afternoon in Northeast-10 men's lacrosse play.
Adelphi, which improves to 12-2 overall and 8-2 in the NE-10, has now won six in a row and eight of nine. Bentley finishes the regular season at 5-8 overall and 5-5 in the NE-10.
The Falcons dug themselves a hole early, falling behind 4-0 after just four minutes of play. Senior attack Bryan Hall scored the first two goals in the opening 3:37 for the Panthers. Senior attack Joe Vitale scored the first of his game-high six goals at the 11:02 mark to make it 4-0.
Adelphi led 7-0 after the first quarter, but Bentley got on the board when junior Steve Caditz (Mercer Island, Wash./Mercer Island) netted his 15th of the season to open the scoring in the second quarter. Senior Justin Holmes (Brookfield, Conn./Berkshire School) and sophomore defenseman Riley Merritt (Weston, Mass./Brewster Academy) also scored for Bentley in the quarter, but they trailed 10-3 at halftime.
Adelphi continued to extend its lead in the second half with a run of seven unanswered goals, including three straight by Vitale in the early parts of the third quarter.
