Five Different Goal Scorers Lead Bentley Past Army West Point 5-2

WEST POINT, N.Y. – Five different players scored as Bentley got 2024 off to a winning start with a 5-2 road victory over Army West Point on Tuesday night at Tate Rink.

It's the second straight victory for the Falcons, who were playing their first Atlantic Hockey game since Dec. 2. They improved to 6-6 in conference games and to 10-10 overall.

The Falcons jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first period with goals by freshman Ryan Mansfield and sophomores Arlo Merritt and Stephen Castagna.

Mansfield's goal at 6:23 came after he beat Army goalie Gavin Abric to the glove side from close range, after defenseman Colton Cameron slid him a pass from the blue line.

Less than five minutes later, Mansfield provided the assist for a goal by Arlo Merritt for a 2-0 lead. Mansfield's pass from the neutral zone led Merritt to a breakaway and he finished it off for his 3rd tally of the season.

At the 13:59 mark Stephen Castagna gave Bentley a three-goal cushion after he wheeled around and beat Abric with a shot from the top of the left faceoff circle.

Army cut the deficit to 3-1 before the first period ended but the Falcons struck twice more in the second frame.

Ryan Upson scored 3:54 into the period after he finished off a breakaway with a deke around Abric for his fourth of the year.

Freshman defenseman Colton Cameron made it 5-1 at 11:07 with his first career goal. Nik Armstrong-Kingkade helped set the goal up with a takeaway behind Army's goal and he stopped Cameron open in the slot for the goal.

Falcons netminder Connor Hasley stopped 23 shots for the win.
