Bentley To Host Army West Point on Post-Thanksgiving Weekend

Game Notes

THE MATCHUP: The Bentley hockey team will host Army West Point at Bentley Arena on the Friday and Saturday after Thanksgiving. Both games are set for a 4:05 pm faceoff.

The Falcons will go into this series with a 4-4 Atlantic Hockey record after splitting on the road with AIC last week. They have split all four of their AHA series so far, against Holy Cross (Oct. 21 & 23), Canisius (Nov. 5-6) and Air Force (Nov. 12-13) before AIC.

The Falcons have non-conference wins over No. 17 ranked Ohio State and No. 19 Boston College and have also played No. 16 Harvard and No. 18 Northeastern.

The Black Knights will come in with a 2-2-2 AHA record. They took three points from their series at Niagara last weekend, with a 3-3 tie and 4-1 victory. Niagara did win the shootout in the first game. Army is 4-0-1 in its last five games. Prior to last weekend, they won three straight games over AIC, Princeton and Yale.

LAST TIME OUT: Bentley dropped the first game at AIC last Thursday 5-0 but rebounded with a 2-1 win in overtime on Friday.

Junior Matt Gosiewski scored the winner 56 seconds into overtime, with Collin Rutherford and Drew Bavaro on the assists. Goalie Evan DeBrouwer made two big saves in overtime prior to Gosiewski's goal. DeBrouwer, a graduate transfer from Arizona State, made 30 saves to earn his first win in a Bentley uniform.

Earlier in the game, Gosiewski scored in the first period to give Bentley a 1-0 lead. The assists came from freshmen Danny Pearson and Tanner Main.

Gosiewski is now tied for the team lead in goals with five, along with sophomore defenseman Drew Bavaro. The overtime goal was Gosiewski's 5th career game-winner and second OT game winner. He scored in OT at Sacred Heart last season on Feb. 16 for a 5-4 Bentley victory.

TEAM NOTES: Graduate student defenseman Matt Lombardozzi's four power play goals are tied for the 7th most nationally and are the most in Atlantic Hockey.

Drew Bavaro's 10 points is tied for the most among defensemen in Atlantic Hockey, with Army's Anthony Firriolo.

SERIES NOTES: The all-time series between Bentley and Army couldn't be much closer. The Black Knights hold a slight edge at 32-30-15.

The teams played four times last season with Army winning three of the four. Bentley won the first game 4-2 on Dec. 4, 2020 behind two goals by Michael Zuffante and 32 saves from goaltender Nicholas Grabko. Defensemen Drew Bavaro and Matt Clark also scored for the Falcons.

After that game though Army won the next three, including 3-2 in overtime in the second game at the Arena on Feb. 12.

Last season was the first time Army won the season series over Bentley since the 2017-18 season. Bentley won the series in 2018-19 (2-1-1) and in 2019-20 (3-1).

Bentley and Army have played eight times at Bentley Arena and have split 4-4. They played in the first ever games at the new barn, on Feb. 16, 2018.

UP NEXT: The Falcons will be back at home next weekend against Mercyhurst on Dec. 3 (7:05 pm) and Dec. 4 (5:05 pm). Those will be the final games of the fall semester.
