Bentley’s Comeback Falls Short as Holy Cross Splits Series

WALTHAM, Mass. – Bentley's comeback from 3-0 down fell short at Bentley Arena on Saturday night as Holy Cross came away with a 3-2 victory.

Graduate student Phil Knies (Phoenix, Ariz.) scored his first goal in a Bentley uniform at 7:59 of the third period and defenseman Drew Bavaro (Bradenton, Fla.) had a power play goal in the 2nd period, his third straight game with a goal, but the Falcons could not find the tying, third goal.

Junior goalie Jason Grande (West Chester, Pa.) made 18 saves over the final 40 minutes for the Falcons.

Holy Cross jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first period on goals by Grayson Constable, Tyler Ghirardosi on the power play and Jack MacNab.

After the first period though, Bentley did not allow another goal and began to climb back in the game.

Bentley first got on the scoreboard on Bavaro's power play goal at 3:26 of the 2nd period. Knies and Brendan Hamblet (Hopkinton, Mass.) had the assists after they worked the puck around to Bavaro on the point.

Bavaro's first shot was blocked but he stayed with it and got off wrist shot that beat Holy Cross goalie Thomas Gale for the goal.

The score stayed 3-1 going into the 3rd period, but Knies scored a shorthanded goal to pull Bentley closer.

The Falcons won a faceoff in the defensive zone and Knies pushed the puck up the right wing. Knies skated in on net and played a centering pass to Matt Lombardozzi (Leominster, Mass.). An initial shot was saved but Knies beat Gale to the spot for the rebound for the goal.

The extra attacker was sent on for the final two-plus minutes but the Falcons could not find the tying goal and Holy Cross held on for the win.

The Falcons, now 3-3 on the season and 1-1 Atlantic Hockey, will next play on Oct. 30 at Harvard.
