Senior Class Comes up Big as Bentley Advances with 5-3 Win over Canisius

Waltham, Mass. – Big contributions from Bentley's senior class saw the Falcons defeat Canisius 5-3 in game two of the Atlantic Hockey first round series on Saturday night for a series sweep.

Ryner Gorowsky (Lino Lakes, Minn.) had a hat trick and Jonathan Desbiens (Montreal, Quebec) scored the late go-ahead goal, on the power play with 1:26 remaining to break a 3-3 tie and give Bentley the lead.

Goaltender Aidan Pelino (Oakville, Ontario) made 27 saves to earn his 4th win in a row.

The Falcons advance to the Atlantic Hockey quarterfinals where they will visit AIC. It will be another best of three series, taking place from March 13-15 at the Mass Mutual Center in Springfield, Mass.

With the game tied 3-3 late in the 3rd period, a Canisius penalty for high sticking set the Falcons up with a power play. The play began with a shot by Matt Gosiewski (Wilton, Conn.) from the top of the left face-off circle that went wide and behind the net. The ricochet went to Desbiens on the far post, and he fired his shot into the open net to give Bentley a 4-3 lead with 1:26 left.

Canisius then pulled goalie Jacob Barczewski in search of the tying goal, but Gorowsky scored an empty netter with 47 seconds left to complete his hat trick and put the game away. To set the goal up Bentley won the puck along the boards in Canisius' offensive zone, and a pass sprung Gorowsky free to sprint down the ice to beat the icing and score out in front.

Bentley led 2-0 after the first period, with both goals scored on special teams. Defenseman Matt Lombardozzi (Leominster, Mass.) scored a power play goal at 9:28, followed by a shorthanded goal for Gorowsky at 11:23. Gorowsky blocked a shot high in Canisius' zone, and collected the puck for a breakaway where beat Barczewski for a 2-0 lead.

Canisius battled back with two straight goals in the 2nd period, first with a power play goal by right wing Lee Lapid at 7:29, then with a goal by left wing Matt Hoover at 12:25.

But Gorowsky's second goal of the night, with just three seconds left in the period, put Bentley back in front 3-2. A power play goal, Michael Zuffante (Bloomingdale, Ill.) set the goal up with a pass from down low. Gorowsky's first shot was saved, but he scored on the rebound from a tight angle for a 3-2 lead.

In the 3rd period Canisius tied the game again, this time with a goal by center Nick Hutchison at 3:13 to make it a 3-3 game.

That was the last goal until Desbiens struck on the power play to put Bentley in front for good.
