Novak, Riggleman and Kirk Lead Bentley Past Sacred Heart 3-2

Bridgeport, Conn. – Goals by Jakov Novak (Windsor, Ontario) and Matt Riggleman (Milford, Mich.) and 26 saves by goalie Fraser Kirk (Burlington, Ontario) led Bentley to a 3-2 victory over No. 20 ranked Sacred Heart on Sunday afternoon to earn as series split.

Novak scored in the 1st and 2nd periods, and Riggleman's goal in the 3rd period was the game-winner. Kirk made 13 saves in the 3rd period as he helped Bentley kill off three Sacred Heart power plays over the final 11 minutes.

Novak's goal at 14:41 of the 1st period gave Bentley a 1-0 lead. The goal started with Luke Santerno (Smithers, B.C.) winning the puck along the boards in the defensive zone and hitting Matt Gosiewski (Wilton, Conn.) with a quick pass in the neutral zone. Gosiewski then found Novak streaking down the right wing, and the sophomore did the rest as he got SHU goalie Josh Benson to go low and Novak shot high over his pads for the goal.

SHU knotted the game 1-1 just under three minutes later on a goal by Austin Magera. The game stayed that way for almost all of the 2nd period, until Novak scored just 19 seconds before intermission.

Novak and Santerno combined on the goal. A turnover by SHU in the neutral zone led to Novak breaking into the offensive zone with Santerno to his right for a two on one. A give and go by the two players ended with Santerno finding Novak in front for the goal to beat Benson. The goal was his 11th of the season.

With the Falcons leading 2-1 in the 3rd period, Riggleman scored to put Bentley up two goals at 5:28. He gained control of the puck along the boards near the blue line, skated to the top of the right face-off circle and ripped a shot that went past Benson's glove for the goal to give Bentley a 3-1 lead.

Kirk and the Falcons penalty kill units then helped the lead stand up the rest of the way, despite a SHU goal at 8:59 by Austin Magera. Kirk earned his 5th win of the season.

The Falcons improved 8-10-1 overall, 6-9 Atlantic Hockey, and the team is now 5-2-1 over the last eight games. They will be back in action on Monday, January 6 to visit Northeastern for a game that will be on NESN.
