Bentley Drops Season Opener to Robert Morris 3-0

Pittsburgh, Pa. – Robert Morris freshman goalie Justin Kapelmaster made 35 saves to lead the Colonials to a 3-0 victory over the Bentley hockey team in the Falcons' season opener on Friday night.

The Falcons outshot Robert Morris 35-16, but Kapelmaster was equal to the task to propel his team to the win. The two teams were squaring off after playing last March in the Atlantic Hockey quarterfinals.

Senior Jonathan Desbiens (Montreal, Quebec) led Bentley with six shots on goal, and junior Michael Zuffante (Bloomingdale, Ill.) had five and defenseman Connor Brassard (Fitchburg, Mass.) four shots.

The first period appeared headed for a scoreless tie until RMU struck in the final seconds, with sophomore Grant Herbet scoring with just 4.8 seconds left to give them a 1-0 lead at the first intermission.

In the second period, Bentley's penalty kill sprang into action and killed off a five minute major to help keep the score 1-0. But despite a 13-5 edge in shots, they could not put one past Kapelmaster and the score remained 1-0 after 40 minutes.

RMU made it a 2-0 game early in the third period on a goal by junior Nick Prkusic, and despite some good scoring chances by Bentley that were denied by Kapelmaster throughout the period, Prkusic sealed the win for RMU with his second goal with 2:17 remaining.

The second game of the series is set for Saturday at 5:05 as the Falcons will look to gain a series split.
