Wydo Scores Late to Deny Bentley Sweep, Game Ends 2-2

WATERTOWN, Mass. – Robert Morris freshman Cody Wydo scored with just two seconds left to tie the game at two ,and that's the way the game ended as the Colonials denied Bentley's bid for a sweep Saturday night in Atlantic Hockey play at Ryan Skating Arena.

With an extra-attacker on the ice for the final 1:23 of regulation, Robert Morris kept pushing for the tying goal. It looked like it wasn't going to happen, but Bentley was called for a penalty with seven seconds left, giving them a 6-on-4 advantage. The Colonials won the ensuing face-off in its offensive zone, and with the puck tied up in the corner, the clock winding down and players from both teams fighting over it, Wydo flung a shot on net that tipped in for the tying goal.

Wydo's goal was the second, last-second goal of this series after freshman Alex Grieve (Calgary, Alberta/Westside Warriors) won Friday's game for the Falcons with 9.7 seconds left.

Robert Morris outshot Bentley 4-2 in overtime, but goalie Brandon Komm (Williamsville, N.Y./Northfield Mount Hermon) kept the puck and ensured Bentley a point, and a three-point weekend against a team that came into the series in a tie for second place in Atlantic Hockey.

The Falcons entered the third period up 2-0, but Robert Morris got on the scoreboard at 4:44 at after junior Tyler Hinds scored on a shot that deflected in off Komm's glove.

While Friday's game was scoreless for the first 34-plus minutes, senior Aaron Stonacek (Basehor, Kan./Fairbanks Ice Dogs) scored the first goal of the game for Bentley just 1:31 into the first period, scoring off a feed from sophomore Jared Rickord (Skokie, Ill./Springfield Jr. Blues). The goal was the fifth of the season for Stonacek.

Sophomore Brett Gensler (St. Charles, Mo./Youngstown Phantoms) made it 2-0 for the Falcons at 4:34 of the second period with his fifth of the campaign. Gensler skated down the right wing on a two-on-one, but the defender chose to cover the trailer leaving Gensler a wide open shot, and he took advantage by beating goalie Eric Levine with a wrist shot.

The tie means Bentley's record goes to 6-9-4 overall and 6-3-3 in Atlantic Hockey, giving them 15 points and puts them in a three-way tie for fifth with UConn and Holy Cross. Robert Morris is now 9-8-3 and 7-3-3.
