WATERTOWN, Mass. – Sophomore Allan McPherson's goal 4:08 into the third period turned out to be the game-winner as Clarkson spoiled the Bentley University hockey team's home-opener 3-2 Friday night in non-conference action.
McPherson's goal gave the Golden Knights a 3-1 lead, but the Falcons made it a one-goal game again on junior Brett Hartung's (Tallahassee, Fla./Wichita Falls Wildcats) second goal of the year at 9:49. Junior Dan Koudys (Grimsby, Ontario/Burlington Cougars) and senior Tyler Quartuccio (Aurora, Colo./Culver Military Academy) had the assists.
Goalie Kyle Rank (Islip,N.Y./Markham Waxers) was pulled with just over a minute left in the game in favor of the extra-attacker but the tying goal wouldn't come.
Clarkson jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period on goals by Nick Tremblay and a power play goal by Ben Sexton, but Bentley settled down from that point on and outshot them 24-14 over the next two periods.
Quartuccio scored with 7:20 left in the second period to make it a 2-1 game with Brett Switzer (Calgary, Alberta/Spruce Grove Saints) and Brett Gensler (St. Charles, Mo./Youngstown Phantoms) assisting.
It stayed a 2-1 game until McPherson's goal in the third.
Senior goalie Paul Karpowich made 33 saves to pick up the win, and the Golden Knights have now won five in a row and are 5-1-1 on the season. Bentley drops to 1-5.
These teams are back at it Saturday night at 7:05 p.m.
