Oliver Places 7th in NCAA Regional; Bentley Finishes in 13th

NASHPORT, Ohio – Bentley University junior Malcolm Oliver (Damariscotta, Maine/Lincoln Academy) tied for seventh in the NCAA Division II East/Atlantic Golf Regional, coming up two strokes shy in his bid to advance to the NCAA Championships.

Oliver finished the three-day tournament with a nine-over 225 after shooting a three-over 75 final round Wednesday at the Longaberger Golf Club. He had the tournament's second-most birdies (10), including three over the final 18, but it was a triple-bogey on his third-to-last hole that denied him the trip to Conover, N.C.

With five holes to play, Oliver seemed to be in good shape with a two-stroke lead in the battle for the two individual positions.  He bogeyed the par-three 188-yard fifth, but bounced back with a par on the sixth. The 557-yard par five seventh was his undoing, sending him from six-over for the tournament (and even for the day) to a plus-nine.

The two individuals to advance, Matt Barto of Gannon and Niklas Koerney of St. Thomas Aquinas, both turned in a two-under 70 over the final 18 to finish the tournament at seven over.

As a team, Bentley finished 13th among the 20 competing teams, falling one spot over the final 18. Coach Mickey Herron's club closed the tournament with a 317 for a three-day total of 956. That put the Falcons second among the four Northeast-10 teams who were participating.

Bentley's number two man in the tournament was senior co-captain Jon Stoddard (Duxbury/ Duxbury HS), who tied for 54th with an 80-80-79-239. Freshman Cal Meyers (Richfield, Wisc./Slinger HS) had his second straight 78 to finish the regional in a tie for 78th with a 246. A total of 108 players participated.

The four teams to advance to the championships were Wilmington University (Del.) (309-292-296-897), Indiana University of Pennsylvania (306-300-296-902), University of Charleston (W.V.) (309-300-294-903) and Le Moyne College (310-304-291-905).

IUP's Kenneth Sames earned medalist honors, finishing at 214 following a four-under 68 final round. Wilmington's Sam Clark was second, a stroke back, and Le Moyne's John Clare came in third with a 220.
