Bentley Receives 4th Straight Bid to NCAA East/Atlantic Golf Regional

WALTHAM, Mass. – The field for the 2014 NCAA Division II regional golf tournaments were announced Friday afternoon with Bentley University earning a berth for the fourth consecutive year and the ninth time in the last 13 years. The Falcons received the number five seed in the East Regional as an at-large selection.

The East and Atlantic regional tournaments will be held jointly at the Edgewood Country Club in Charleston, W.V. May 5-7. The top three teams and the top two student-athletes not on a top-three team will advance to the finals, which will be held at The Meadows in Allendale, Mich. May 19-23.

The automatic qualifiers for the East Regional are top-seeded Wilmington College of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference and second-seeded Adelphi University of the Northeast-10 Conference. In addition to Bentley, at-large berths went to St. Thomas Aquinas College, Le Moyne College, Concordia College (N.Y.), Nyack College, Southern New Hampshire University, American International College and Dowling College.

Five of the ten teams are out of the Northeast-10, three are out of the CACC and both St. Thomas Aquinas and Dowling are from the East Coast Conference.

The ten teams out of the Atlantic Region include automatic qualifiers Millersville University (Pennsylvania State) and Virginia State (Central Intercollegiate), along with top-seeded and defending East/Atlantic regional champion Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

Bentley has eight top-four finishes this season under fourth-year head coach Mickey Herron, including victories during the fall portion of the schedule at the Northeast Challenge and the Dominican Charger Challenge. The Falcons were second in the Northeast-10 Championships and sixth in the New Englands last fall, and the team's best performance this spring was a second-place in the Bear Trap Dunes Invitational in Delaware. The field for that tournament included five of the East Region teams who earned NCAA bids.

Four of the five Falcons who'll be making the trek to West Virginia have season stroke averages below 79, with the list headed by junior Jon Stoddard (Duxbury/Duxbury HS). He's averaged 75.5 this season and has been in the 70s for all 16 of his rounds.

Senior Ryan Hudson (Purchase, N.Y./Iona Prep) follows with a 77.4 for 8.5 rounds, sophomore Malcolm Oliver (Damariscotta, Maine/Lincoln Academy) has posted a 77.6, and senior captain Harry Kirkpatrick (Lancaster/Nashoba Reg. HS) follows with a 78.8. Competing the expected contingent for the NCAAs is junior Quincy Coulter (Lake Bluff, Ill./Lake Forest HS), who is still rounding into form after spending the fall semester studying in Singapore.

Kirkpatrick, Oliver and Stoddard all played in last year's East/Atlantic Regional when the Falcons tied for tenth place.
