Michel Garners 2nd Straight NE-10 Sport Excellence Award for Golf

WALTHAM, Mass. – The awards continue for former Bentley University golfer Matt Michel (Danvers/Danvers HS) as the May graduate was named the recipient of the 2012-13 Northeast-10 Conference Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence award for golf on Tuesday. It's the second straight year that he has been so honored.

Michel was also named to the Academic All-Northeast-10 team for the third time, and his teammate, Dan McQueen (Topsfield/Masconomet Reg. HS) received Academic All-Conference honors for the second time.

Last month, both were selected for the Capital One NCAA Division II Academic All-America® men's at-large team, with Michel, a second-time honoree, chosen for first-team honors and McQueen voted to the third team.

Michel, a two-time Ping Division II All-East Region selection, previously received the Edward J. Powers Award as Bentley's premier senior student-athlete and the Guy Tedesco Award, from the New England Intercollegiate Golf Association, for leadership, scholarship and playing ability.

The owner of a 3.88 grade point average as a corporate finance and accounting major, Michel led the 2012-13 Falcons with a 75.8 stroke average and finished his career with a 77.3 average.

McQueen, a finance major, was right behind Michel in both GPA (3.86) and career stroke average (77.5). He placed third in the 2012 Northeast-10 championships and tied for sixth in the New Englands last fall.

The two co-captains helped Bentley reach the NCAA Division II East/Atlantic Super Regional for the third straight season.

Michel is one of five Bentley student-athletes to receive a Northeast-10 Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Award for the 2012-13 academic year, joining Weston Zeiner (men's soccer), Lauren Battista (women's basketball), Amy Varsell (women's outdoor track) and John Drago (men's cross country, men's outdoor track).
