WALTHAM, Mass. – Recent Bentley University graduates Matt Michel (Danvers/Danvers HS) and Dan McQueen (Topsfield/Masconomet Reg. HS), who have both played key roles in the success of the Falcon golf team in recent years, have been selected to the 2013 Capital One NCAA Division II Academic All-America® Men's At-Large team by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Michel was voted to the 15-man first-team after receiving third-team accolades a year ago, and McQueen was tabbed for the third team.

The men's at-large program encompasses a number of sports, including tennis, swimming, lacrosse and ice hockey, as well as golf.

"First of all, the entire Bentley golf team is so honored to have had both Matt Michel and Danny McQueen as part of our family the past three years," said coach Mickey Herron. "To have two of only seven Capital One Academic All-America golfers come from our program is unbelievably gratifying in so many respects, and to receive continued recognition for their hard work and talent has set the bar high for future Bentley golfers.  

Michel, who was recently named to the Ping Division II All-East Region team for the second straight season, led the Falcons with a 75.8 stroke average after shooting 79 or better in 17 of 20 rounds. Owner of a 77.3 career average, he was recognized with the 2012-13 Edward J. Powers Award as Bentley's premier senior scholar-athlete and received the 2012 Northeast-10 Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Award for golf. Last October, he was presented with the prestigious Guy Tedesco Award from the New England Intercollegiate Golf Association for leadership, scholarship and playing ability.

McQueen played a team-high 22 rounds during his final collegiate season, finishing with a 77.4 stroke average. He placed third in the Northeast-10 Conference Championships last fall and tied for sixth in the 2012 New Englands. McQueen, in three Bentley seasons, amassed a career stroke average of 77.5 and combined with Michel, helped the Falcons earn an NCAA tournament bid each year.

Michel and McQueen also made their mark in the classroom, with both graduating Summa Cum Laude with grade point averages of 3.85 or better. Michel majored in both corporate finance and accounting and liberal studies, and McQueen earned his degree in finance.

"These two co-captains epitomized what it means to be a leader," praised Herron. "They were instrumental in capturing five tournament victories the past two years and were always pushing their teammates on the course and in the classroom, illustrated by their great golf and phenomenal grades while deftly negotiating the hurdles of D-II athletics.

"We all wish them the best as they move forward with Matt headed to Bentley grad school and Danny entering the workforce.  I know that two companies will be very fortunate indeed to have Michel and/or McQueen as part of their team."
