Bentley Rebounds on Day 2 of NCAA Regional, Moves Up 7 Places to 12th

WHEELING, W.V. – With all five players improving on their opening round score by at least four strokes, the Bentley University Falcons moved up seven places in the team standings Tuesday and will enter Wednesday's final round tied for 12th place in the 2013 NCAA Division II Atlantic/East Golf Regional at the Oglebay Resort and Conference Center.

Bentley had the sixth best score of the second round, with the team's 303 twenty-five strokes better than Monday's tally. With a two-day total of 631, coach Mickey Herron's team is eight strokes away from the top ten and 17 shy of the top five.

Senior captains Matt Michel (Danvers, Mass./Danvers HS) and Dan McQueen (Topsfield, Mass./Masconomet Reg. HS) each finished with a four-over 75 Tuesday at the 7,001-yard Speidel Jones Course, as did sophomore Jon Stoddard (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury HS).

Bentley also received 78s from its other two golfers, junior Harry Kirkpatrick (Lancaster, Mass./ Nashoba Reg. HS) and freshman Malcolm Oliver (Damariscotta, Maine/Lincoln Academy).

Through 36 holes, Michel has the team's best score with his 154 (79-75) putting him in a tie for 25th among 108 golfers. Stoddard (82-75-157) is tied for 46th, and McQueen (85-75-160) moved into a tie for 64th after improving on his previous round by ten strokes, a jump of 32 places.

Bentley had five birdies during the day, including two apiece from Michel and Oliver.

For the tournament, Michel's average of 3.13 on par three holes is tied for fourth best, and McQueen's 4.83 on par fives is tied for tenth best. Stoddard has posted 24 pars over the first 36 holes, ranking fifth in that category.

The top three teams will advance to the NCAA Division II Championships with those positions currently held by Wilmington University (Del.) (599), Indiana University (Pa.) (603) and Millersville University (605). The top two individuals not on the top three teams will also qualify, and the current cutoff for that is a 150.

Robert Coyne of Millersville tops the leaderboard with a 73-70-143, good for a two-stroke lead over Zack Kempa of IUP.

Bentley will tee off in the afternoon session on Wednesday, from 12 noon to 12:40.
