Bentley Golf Set for Third Straight Appearance in NCAA Regional

WALTHAM, Mass. – Following an impressive spring season that has included a pair of tournament championships, the Bentley University golf team will be at the Oglebay Resort and Conference Center in Wheeling, W.V. Monday through Wednesday for the 2013 NCAA Division II Atlantic/East Super Regional.

Coach Mickey Herron's team will be making its third straight appearance in the regional and will be looking to improve on its previous performances. The Falcons were 17th in 2011 and tied for 13th last year.

Making the trip to West Virginia will be senior captains Matt Michel (Danvers/Danvers HS) and Dan McQueen (Topsfield/Masconomet Reg. HS), junior Harry Kirkpatrick (Lancaster/Nashoba Reg. HS), sophomore Jon Stoddard (Duxbury/Duxbury HS) and freshman Malcolm Oliver (Damariscotta, Maine/ Lincoln Academy).

McQueen and Kirkpatrick are making return trips to the regional, while Michel will also be competing for the second time. The 2012 Capital One Academic All-America participated in the regional in 2011 but was sidelined by illness last year.

All five Bentley players who'll be competing this week have put together solid spring seasons with Michel topping the list with a 74.6 stroke average for eight rebounds. Stoddard has a 75.3 for four rounds and Oliver a 75.6 for eight. McQueen's norm this spring has been 77.8, and Kirkpatrick, coming off a win in the Rich Kruzec Memorial, follows at 78.7 for three rounds.

If all five of Bentley's players live up to those numbers this coming week, that projects to a three-day team score between 910 and 920. That would be a significant improvement over last year when the Falcons finished with a 960.

A total of 20 teams will be participating and the top three, along with the top two individuals not on one of the top three teams, will advance to the NCAA Division II Championships, which will be held in Hershey, Pa. later in the month.

Bentley, the eighth seed out of the East, is scheduled for a noon tee time on Monday and a 7:30 am start on Tuesday. When available, a link to live scoring will be posted on www.bentleyfalcons.com.
