Bentley Ties for 13th in NCAA Division II East/Atlantic Super Regional

HERSHEY, Pa. – Turning in its best round of the three-day, 54-hole tournament, the Bentley University golf team tied for 13th out of 20 teams in the 2012 NCAA Division II East/Atlantic Super Regional, which concluded Wednesday at the Hershey Country Club East Course.

Bentley, one of 12 teams that had to finish its suspended second round early Wednesday morning, recorded a final round 314 to finish the tournament with a 960. The Falcons missed out on a top-ten finish by 11 strokes and a trip to the nationals by 15 strokes.

Senior captain Richie Powers (Leominster, Mass./Leominster HS), in his final tournament as a collegian, was the Falcons' top finisher, shooting a final round 78 to finish at 237, good for a tie for 30th in a field of 107. He got better each round of the regional, shooting an 80 on Monday and 79 over the second 18.

Bentley's number two man was sophomore Harry Kirkpatrick (Lancaster, Mass./Nashoba Reg. HS), who tied for 47th with a 240 (78-83-79). He had a team-best seven birdies during the 54 holes, including four over the final 18.

Powers and Grant Alter (Rancho Sante Fe, Calif./La Jolla Country Day) had Bentley's best scores during the final round, with Alter matching Powers' 78.

Wilmington College (Del.) won the team championship by six strokes over Indiana University (Pa.), and the Wildcats' Paul Tighe was the medalist.  He turned in a four-over 217 to win the tournament by eight strokes over a pair of golfers from Indiana (Pa.).

Due to weather-related issues, 12 teams, including Bentley, had to finish their second round Wednesday morning before playing the scheduled 18. The Falcons' top golfers during the second round were the same as during the third round, Alter and Powers, both with a 79.

Other Northeast-10 teams in the field were UMass-Lowell (10th), Adelphi (18th), American International (19th) and Franklin Pierce (20th).
