Outstanding First Day for Bentley Golf at New Englands

BREWSTER, Mass. – With all five players shooting 77 or better, the Bentley University Falcons finished Monday's first day of play at the New England Intercollegiate Golf Association Championships in third place overall, and in first place among Division II participants, with a score of 305.  The tournament concludes on Tuesday on the Starboard Course at the Captains Golf Club.

Bentley stands four strokes back of co-leaders Bryant University and the College of Holy Cross.  The Falcons have a one-stroke lead over UMass-Lowell and a seven-stroke bulge over American International College in the battle for Division II supremacy.

On a day of low scores, Bentley was the only one of the 34 teams to have every one of its golfers shoot under 80.

Senior Richie Powers (Leominster/Leominster HS) led the strong showing by the Falcons with his three-over 75 putting him in a tie for eighth in the field of 169 golfers. Junior Matt Michel (Danvers/ Danvers HS) followed with a 76, which placed him in a tie for 15th.

The other three Falcons are each tied for 24th after turning in 77's.  They are senior Nick Clarke (Plymouth/Cape Cod Academy), junior Dan McQueen (Topsfield/Masconomet Reg. HS) and freshman Quincy Coulter (Lake Bluff, Ill./Lake Forest HS).

A trio of golfers are tied for the individual honors at the midway point as Steven Zychowski (Holy Cross), Spencer Sweitzer (Bryant) and Kevin Daniels (AIC) all registered a one-under 71 on the Port Course.
