Powers Captures Assumption College Shootout; Bentley Finishes 2nd as a Team

SUTTON, Mass. – A day after helping the Bentley University golf team capture the Northeast-10 Conference championship, senior captain Richie Powers (Leominster/Leominster HS) captured medalist honors at the Assumption College Shootout on Tuesday, shooting an even-par 72 at Pleasant Valley Country Club.

As a team, Bentley posted a score of 315, good for second among eight teams.  Holy Cross took the team title with a 308, and American International was third, three strokes back of the Falcons.

Powers, with his 72, won the tournament by two strokes over Tim Rattigan of Saint Anselm and a pair of Holy Cross golfers, Pete Cahill and Andrew Wong.  Weather conditions were variable, to say the least, as sun, clouds and wind-driven rain were present at various times.

Bentley's other golfer to shoot under 80 was freshman Quincy Coulter (Lake Bluff, Ill./Lake Forest HS), who finished with a 78 and tied for ninth place in his first collegiate tournament.

Bentley's next tournament is the Nova Southeastern Shark Invitational in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. Oct. 10-11. That will be played at the PGA National Resort, which has been the site of the 1983 Rider Cup, the 1987 PGA Championships, the Honda Classic and for nearly 20 years, the PGA Senior Championship.
