Michel, Powers Help Bentley Finish 5th in Dowling September Shootout

RIVERHEAD, N.Y. – In its final tournament before the upcoming Northeast-10 Conference Championships, the Bentley University golf team finished fifth among 18 teams in the Dowling September Shootout, which concluded Sunday at Long Island National Golf Club.

With junior Matt Michel (Danvers, Mass./Danvers HS) and senior Richie Powers (Leominster, Mass./Leominster HS) setting the pace, Bentley had a two-day score of 607 over the par-71 course, including a second-round 297.

Michel and Powers both tied for 12th among 90 participants, with each totaling a 150. Michel had a first-round 74 and a second-day 76, and Powers' numbers were just the opposite.

The best round of the tournament for the Falcons was posted by junior Dan McQueen (Topsfield, Mass./Masconomet Reg. HS) on Sunday, a career-best 73. Junior Francesco Possio (Torino, Italy) also registered his best as a collegian during the second round, a 74. For the tournament, McQueen tied for 24th (80-73-153) and Possio tied for 38th (84-74-158).

St. Thomas Aquinas College captured the team title by a dozen strokes over Post University, 580-592. Dowling following at 600, and Adelphi University also finished in front of Bentley, with the Panthers' 601 good for fourth.

Kurt Brey of Dowling earned medalist honors after winning a playoff with Concordia's Jeff Schaller on the fourth hole. Each finished the tourney with an even-par 142.

The Northeast-10 championships will be held next Sunday and Monday at the Cyprian Keyes Golf Course in Boylston, Mass.
