Michel, Clarke Help Bentley Capture Season-Opening Saint Rose Shootout

GUILDERLAND, N.Y. – With junior Matt Michel (Danvers, Mass./Danvers HS) and senior Nick Clarke (Plymouth, Mass./Cape Cod Academy) showing the way, the Bentley University golf team recorded its first tournament championship in four years, capturing the Saint Rose Fall Shootout by six strokes over Post University.

Bentley fired an impressive 299 during the second round Saturday and finished the 11-team tournament, held at Pinehaven Country Club, with a score of 605. Post followed at 611, and UMass-Lowell was third with 617.

The tournament title was the Falcons first since the 2007 Northeast-10 Championships, and that same fall was also the last time that Bentley had a better one day or 36-hole score.

Michel matched his career-best with an even-par 71 and finished the tournament with a four-over 146, one back of medalist Anthony Viskovich of UMass-Lowell (73-72-145).  Clarke finished in sixth place at 74-76-150.

Senior Grant Alter (Rancho Sante Fe, Calif./La Jolla Country Day) had a strong second-day for Bentley, with his 74 giving him a two-day score of 154, good for a tie for 11th. Sophomore Harry Kirkpatrick (Lancaster, Mass./Nashoba Reg. HS) was the Falcons' number four man, tying for 15th at 77-79-156.

Bentley's next action is the Northeast Intercollegiates Sept. 18-19 in Berlin, Conn.
