Bentley Pulls Away From AIC for 20th Win of Season

WALTHAM, Mass. – The trio of graduate student Mason Webb (Oklahoma City, Okla./Bishop McGuinness HS) and junior guards Zach Laput (Beacon Falls, Conn./Notre Dame HS) and Aaron Latham (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury HS) combined for 50 points, 15 assists and 17 rebounds as Bentley University earned its 20th win of the season, 78-63, in Northeast-10 Conference men's basketball Tuesday night on Barbara Stevens Court.

Bentley, number 15 in the D2SIDA media poll, also received 12 points and a conference season-high 20 rebounds from graduate forward Matt Leritz (St. Louis, Mo./St. Louis University HS) in the Senior Night win. That was the most by a Falcon since Charlie Wootton had that many against Tufts University 45 years ago.

With the W, Bentley reached the 20-win milestone for the second straight season and the 18th time in program history. Coach Jay Lawson's team finished the regular season at 20-5 overall and 15-5 NE10, and will be the third seed in the upcoming conference championships. The Falcons will host the winner of Friday's Le Moyne College-St. Michael's College on Sunday afternoon in a quarterfinal game.

There was little separation in a first half that included six ties and four lead changes.

Following Latham's second three-pointer of the night and Bentley's fifth triple of the first 11-plus minutes, the Falcons were up eight, 27-19. However, they went scoreless for nearly five minutes, allowing AIC to score eight unanswered and take a 28-27 left with 3:50 to play in the half.

The game was knotted at 31 with two minutes left until intermission, but Bentley took a five-point lead, 36-31, into intermission following a left wing three by Laput and a lay-up by Webb.

Early in the second half, Bentley put together a 17-5 run to open up a 56-41 lead with 13 minutes left. The surge included a couple Webb three balls and five points from graduate guard Brian Wright-Kinsey (Brooklyn, N.Y./Brooks School).

The differential remained in double figures the rest of the way and peaked at 19 a couple times in the final five minutes.

Webb, four of six from downtown, led all scorers with 18 points and moved into the top 25 on Bentley's all-time scoring list. Latham, four of eight from distance, and Laput followed with 16 points apiece. Laput added ten rebounds and seven assists, and Latham handed out six helpers. Bentley also received nine points from Wright-Kinsey.

Bentley shot 49 percent while limiting the Yellow Jackets to 39 percent and also controlled the boards, 42-28. Assists were 21-11 Falcons and the home team also had a 17-9 advantage in second chance points.
