Webb & Laput Lead No. 14 Bentley to 12th Straight Win, 70-58 at St. Michael’s

COLCHESTER, Vt. – Graduate guard Mason Webb (Oklahoma City, Okla./Bishop McGuinness HS) scored a season-high 20 points, including 15 in the second half, and junior guard Zach Laput (Beacon Falls, Conn./Notre Dame HS) had a 19-point, 10-rebound double-double as Bentley University extended its winning streak to 12, 70-58 over St. Michael's College Saturday afternoon at the Ross Sports Center.

Bentley, ranked 14th in Division II, outscored the Purple Knights 44-33 in the second half to improve to 14-1 overall and a conference-best 9-1 NE10. It was the fifth straight loss for St. Michael's, which left the court 8-10 overall and 2-8 conference.

Coach Jay Lawson's club took a 26-25 lead into intermission following a first half that included 11 lead changes and three ties. Laput, the NE10's top scorer, had 10 on four-of-eight shooting in the half and a Webb three with 5:31 on the clock produced the biggest lead of the closely-played first, 23-18.

There would be four more lead changes during the opening 75 seconds of the second, the last coming on a mid-range jumper by Webb that ignited an 8-0 spurt. Webb followed with a top-of-the-key trey and junior guard Aaron Latham (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury HS) followed with a right-side three for a 36-29.

The Bentley lead remained from four to nine points until a lay-up by graduate forward Matt Leritz (St. Louis, Mo./St. Louis University HS) with 3:15 left made it 60-50.

St. Michael's answered by scoring the next five, including a three-pointer from sophomore forward Jacob Duniver (Fredericksburg, Va.) that made it 60-55 with 2:13 to play.

Laput answered with his straightaway three with 1:37 left restoring the Falcon advantage to eight. That began a game-ending 10-3 run that included two free throws by Latham and four by Webb.

Webb, who was seven of 13 from the field, also had six rebounds, two assists and two steals. Laput made eight of his 12 shots, including all three of his treys, and had a team-best six assists. Latham was Bentley's third double-figure scorer with 11 points. Leritz, a team-best plus-13, finished with nine points and seven rebounds.

Freshman guard Darrel Yepdo (Dracut, Mass.) powered St. Michael's with 23 points as he made nine of 15 overall and five of six from deep. He entered the game with a 2.7 scoring average and only four career three-pointers.

Bentley shot 67 percent in the second half, 16 of 24, and finished at .473, ten percentage points better than the home team. The Falcons controlled the rebounds, 41-28, and had a 19-5 advantage in assists.

Bentley's 11 offensive rebounds led to 17 second chance points. Three of those were collected by senior guard Kellen Bochenek (Kettering, Ohio/Fairmont HS), whose seven total rebounds matched his career-best.

The Falcons will be back in the Dana Center Wednesday against second-place New Haven.
