Webb Three at OT Buzzer Gives Bentley Stunning 91-90 Win at Post

WALTHAM, Mass. – Senior guard Mason Webb (Oklahoma City, Okla./Bishop McGuinness HS) buried a 24-footer at the overtime buzzer as Bentley University stunned Post University, 91-90, in non-conference men's basketball Saturday afternoon at the Drubner Center.

Senior forward Devonte Mccall (Amherst, Mass.) gave Post (4-6) a two-point lead, 90-88, when he hit a turn-around jumper in the lane with two seconds. Following a Falcon timeout, it was the responsibility of graduate forward Pete Blust (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale HS) to make the inbound pass.

Blust ran the baseline and fired a baseball pass nearly the length of the court to his target. Webb, who was just one of seven from deep at that point, caught it and drained his second three-ball of the afternoon for the win. For Coach Jay Lawson's team, which never trailed in the second half, it was their first lead of the extra session.

All five starters scored in doubles for Bentley, which improved to 7-2 on the season. Sophomore guard Zach Laput (Beacon Falls, Conn./Notre Dame HS) led the way with a career-high 22 points. He also had nine rebounds and four assists.

Graduate guard Jordan Mello-Klein (Sharon/Thayer Academy) followed with 17, Webb finished with 15, senior guard Brian Wright-Kinsey (Brooklyn, N.Y./Brooks School) dropped in 13 and Blust's day included ten points, nine rebounds, five assists and a couple steals.

Up one at the half, Bentley opened the second with a 12-2 spurt to take the biggest lead of the game, 56-45. Webb launched the run with a three from the left corner, Laput connected from the opposite corner, Wright-Kinsey had a pair of baskets and Blust hit a runner.

The Eagles got back in the game and made it it a one-possession game six times before junior forward Jordan Williams (Brooklyn, N.Y.) knocked down two free throws with two minutes to play to make it a 74-all game.

Bentley regained the lead twice, on a Mello-Klein basket and a Laput drive but each time, Post was able to counter. In the waning seconds, both teams missed a potential go-ahead shot, sending the game to OT.

Overtime saw the visiting Falcons tie the game four times, setting the stage for the dramatic finish. Mello-Klein made it 81-81 with a three-pointer, a basket from Blust made it 83-all, Webb's elbow jumper knotted the score at 86 and Mello-Klein scored on a drive with 25 seconds left to make it 88-all.

Mccall, who gave Post the lead with two seconds left, finished with a game-high 31 points. He also had three triples, six rebounds and three blocks.

Bentley controlled the boards, 47-37, with four of the five starters grabbing eight or more. Laput matched Blust's game-high nine rebounds.

Both teams shot about 45 percent but the Falcons had the edge in trifectas made, 11-9. Bentley had a 40-26 advantage in points in the paint and outscored the Eagles 15-12 in points off turnovers.

Bentley will be back in action Monday with a 2 pm game at American International.
