Mello-Klein Leads 5 in Doubles as Bentley Posts Wire-to-Wire Win

WALTHAM, Mass. – Graduate guard Jordan Mello-Klein (Sharon/Thayer Academy), one of five Falcons score in double figures, finished with 26 points and nine rebounds as Bentley University went wire-to-wire for a 95-79 non-conference win over Southern New Hampshire University in men's college basketball at the Dana Center Sunday afternoon.

Bentley, ranked 15th in the D2SIDA media poll, improved to 3-1 while SNHU, number 24 in the NABC Division II coaches poll, dropped to 4-2.

The Falcons were hot out of the gate, hitting six of their first seven shots to take a 16-2 lead before the game was five minutes old. Mello-Klein and senior guard Mason Webb (Oklahoma City, Okla./Bishop McGuinness HS) opened the scoring with three-pointers and sophomore guard Zach Laput (Beacon Falls, Conn./Notre Dame HS), who was making his first career start, had six during the fast start.

After the first-half differential peaked at 17, SNHU closed strong, using a 21-9 spurt to pull within four at the break, 48-44. Top scorers during the half were Laput, with a career-high 13, and SNHU freshman forward Aaron Gray (Providence, R.I.) with 12.

Eight points by Webb, including two triples, and four from Mello-Klein, in the first five-and-a-half minutes of the second half, put Bentley back up 15, 62-47.

After the Penmen got back within seven, the Falcons used a 14-6 surge to restore the lead to 14, 78-64 with 7:25 to play. Five different players scoring during that stretch with both Webb and Mello-Klein connecting from deep.

Mello-Klein's highest scoring game of the season saw him make 10 of 18 shots overall and six of ten from three. He also had three assists and two steals.

Laput was six of ten from the floor for a career-best 18 points, and Webb buried five of nine three-pointers en route to 17 points. He also contributed eight rebounds and four assists.

Bentley also received 14 points from graduate forward Adria Amabilino-Perez (Barcelona, Spain) and 13 from senior guard Brian Wright-Kinsey (Brooklyn, N.Y./Brooks School).

Gray was the top scorer for SNHU, with 22 points on 9-of-13 shooting.

The Falcons outscored the Penmen by 18 points from three-point land, sinking 13 of 28. Bentley also controlled the boards, 40-32, and finished with a 17-7 advantage in second chance points.

Bentley will be back at home both Wednesday, against Assumption, and Saturday, against Bridgeport.
