Bentley, in Battle for NE10 Playoff Berth, Hosts Saint Anselm on Senior Day

WALTHAM, Mass. – With its postseason future still to be determined, the Bentley University men's basketball team will face a difficult assignment Saturday afternoon (3:30 pm) when they host Saint Anselm College in the final home game of the season. A free webcast will be available at www.bentleyfalcons.tv.

Bentley, 12-12 overall after using a huge second half (58 points, 21/30 field goals) for a 93-75 win at St. Michael's Wednesday, enters the final two games of the regular season in an apparent tie with Stonehill College for the fifth and final playoff nod out of the Northeast-10 Conference's Northeast Division. It's only apparent because although both clubs are 9-10 in conference play, Stonehill holds the tie-breaker by virtue of a sweep during the regular season.

Just ahead of both the Falcons and Skyhawks in fourth is Franklin Pierce University with a 10-9 NE10 mark. Like Bentley, both also play one of the Northeast's top three this afternoon with Stonehill at first-place Southern New Hampshire and Franklin Pierce home against Merrimack College, which is tied for second with Saint Anselm.

Prior to the game, Bentley will recognize the team's four seniors: Matt Barr (Stratham, N.H./ Cushing Academy), Ferguson Duke (Dartmouth, N.S./Hun School (N.J.)), Tyler Gibson (Rockland/ Rockland HS) and Chris Murray (Littleton/Littleton HS). Barr and Duke have been regulars in the Falcon starting unit, Gibson has seen action in 16 games and Murray has appeared in 21.

Barr, coming off a career-high 20 points in the St. Michael's win, has upped his averaged to 10.4 points after putting up 66 total points in his last five games. His .446 accuracy mark ranks fifth in the Northeast-10.

Duke, who had the first 20-point game of his career four days before his classmate, owns a 9.7 scoring average for the season. Over the last five, he's given the Falcons 11.6 points and 6.4 rebounds a game, exceeding his season norms.

Murray averages 2.4 points in 21 games while Gibson owns averages of 3.1 points and 2.8 rebounds. Both have achieved a career scoring high this season with Murray hitting three triples for nine points Wednesday at St. Michael's and Gibson had 14 in the first St. Michael's game.

Sophomore guard Ryan Richmond (Toronto, Ont./Thomson Collegiate) has been held in check  the last two games (17 vs. Franklin Pierce, 19 at St. Michael's) but remains one of the NE10's top scorers at 21.1. He's only five free throws made away from joining Bill Holden and Tim Forbes as the only Falcons to make at least 150 in a season.

Junior forward Brandon Wheeler (Stamford, Conn./Trinity Catholic HS) had his fourth straight double-double Wednesday and his tenth of the season, most by a Falcon since Brian Tracey had 11 in 2009. He's up to fifth in the NE10 in rebounding, averaging 9.1.

Saint Anselm, 16-7 overall and 12-7 NE10, comes in only a two-point loss at Merrimack away from a 12-game winning streak. The Hawks have had a great shooting season (.486 overall, .416 from 3, .780 free throw) and lead the conference in scoring (86.7) and rebound margin (+7.1).

Sophomore guard Tim Guers has been on a scoring tear for the Hawks, averaging 27.1 in January and 24.4 this month. In Wednesday's 85-84 win at Stonehill, he poured in a career-best 37 points with four triples and 13 free throws.

The Hawk arsenal also includes senior forward Harrison Taggart (16.1 ppg, .494 from three) and junior guard Taylor Fortin (15.6), sophomore guard Cody Ball (12.1) and senior forward Chris Braley (11.6 ppg, 9.0 rpg). Coach Keith Dickson has seen his starters provide 87 percent of the scoring this season with the bench averaging only 11.5 points a game.

In the earlier meeting this season, Saint Anselm won on its home court, 91-86, in a game it was a +18 on the boards. Richmond erupted for 32 points on 14-20 shooting for Bentley and Bradley turned in a 26-point, 12-rebound double-double for the Hawks.

Bentley will close out the regular season Tuesday at Merrimack College.
