After Ending Le Moyne’s Win Streak, Bentley Faces Another Tough Test Wednesday at Saint Rose

WALTHAM, Mass. – On Saturday, the Bentley University men's basketball team won for the fifth time in six games while bringing Le Moyne College's ten-game winning streak to an end.

Coach Jay Lawson's team will face another difficult test on Wednesday when the Falcons travel to Albany, N.Y. to face The College of Saint Rose. The Golden Knights, 8-1 in their last nine, are ranked second in this week's D2SIDA East Region media poll and lead the East in wins with their 17-4 record.

The Le Moyne win, which boosted the Falcons to 9-8 overall and 6-6 in the Northeast-10, marked the third time this season, and the second time in eight days, that Bentley went wire-to-wire for the victory. It featured Bentley's best shooting effort since November and the eighth time this year with ten turnovers or fewer.

Over the last half dozen games, the Falcons have limited their opponents to an average of 71.8 points with shooting percentages of .406 overall and .350 from three. Le Moyne finished with a .403 field goal percentage and was 10 of 30 from deep.

Guard Ryan Richmond (Toronto, Ont./Thomson Collegiate) has been having a solid season for the Falcons with his scoring average of 19.6 the best by a Bentley sophomore since Billy Holden nearly 30 years ago. He leads the conference in free throws made (100) and is collecting 5.6 rebounds a game despite being only six-foot.

Another sophomore who has been productive has been forward Zach Gilpin (Hampden, Maine/ Hampden Academy). Bentley is 5-2 in his seven starts and he's  coming off back-to-back 21-point , 4-assist performances that have raised his season norm to 12.7 points per game.

Junior Brandon Wheeler (Stamford, Conn./Trinity Catholic HS) came within a point of his sixth double-double on Saturday and is currently sixth in the NE10 in rebounding, averaging 8.6. He's also second on the team in scoring at 11.3.

Rounding out Bentley's usual starting five are senior guards Ferguson Duke (Dartmouth, N.S./ Hun School (N.J.)) and Matt Barr (Stratham, N.H./Cushing Academy). Barr (10.2 ppg) is third in the conference in three-point accuracy (.489) and Duke (9.2 ppg) is tied with Wheeler for the team lead in steals (19).

Saint Rose leads the Northeast-10 in fewest points allowed (65.8) and is one of the conference's top shooting teams, ranking first in free throw percentage, second in three-point accuracy and fifth in overall field goal percentage. The Golden Knights have kept their opponents until 70 points in 14 of 21 games, all but one of those a win.

Saint Rose, like Bentley, has four double-figure scorers, including two-time All-Conference forward Tyler Sayre. His 12.7 average is second on the team, trailing the 13.0 put up by junior guard Mical-Ryan Boyd. Six-foot-eight, 240-pound junior Jack Jones is a force off the bench, giving the Golden Knights 12.7 points a game, 36 triples and 19 blocks.

On Saturday, Bentley will complete the crossover portion of its conference schedule, playing a 3:30 pm game at Southern Connecticut State.
