After Winning 4 of Last 5, Bentley Looks to Cool Off Streaking Le Moyne

WALTHAM, Mass. – A difficult three-game stretch for the Bentley University men's basketball team will get underway Saturday when the Falcons host streaking Le Moyne College in the finale of a three-game homestand. Game time at the Dana Center is set for 3:30 pm with a free webcast available at www.bentleyfalcons.tv.

Coach Jay Lawson's team, which has won four of its last five, will be attempting to make it a 3-0 homestand after earning wins over American International (77-65) and Pace University (84-59) in its previous two contests. The Falcons evened their overall record at 8-8 with the Pace victory on Wednesday while improving to 5-6 in the Northeast-10 Conference.

Le Moyne will come into Waltham riding a 10-game winning streak, one it kept alive with an overtime victory against St. Michael's College Wednesday. The Dolphins have climbed to the top of the NE10 Southwest Division standings, owning records of 14-3 overall and 9-2 conference.

Wednesday's 25-point victory over Pace featured a 35-5 run after the two teams were separated by only one point about three minutes into the second half.  During that span of 13 minutes, the Falcon D limited the Setters to a .125 field goal percentage (2-16) with five turnovers.

The trio of sophomore forward Zach Gilpin (Hampden, Maine/Hampden Academy), junior forward Brandon Wheeler (Stamford, Conn./Trinity Catholic HS) and sophomore guard Ryan Richmond (Toronto, Ont./Thomson Collegiate) combined for 60 points, one more than Pace managed as a team.

Gilpin buried a career-best five three-pointers en route to a game-high 21 points, raising his season norm to 12.1 points. Since making his first career start seven games ago, he's given the Falcons 16.4 ppg while shooting 48 percent overall.

Wheeler posted his fifth double-double of the season Wednesday (20 points, 11 rebounds) with Bentley 4-1 in those contests. Fifth in the NE10 in defensive rebounding, he's averaging 11.4 points and 8.5 rebounds with a team-high 18 steals.

Richmond, after tallying 19 against the Setters, is sixth in the conference in scoring (19.8). His 5.5 rebound average is second to Wheeler and he's second in the NE10 in free throws made and attempted (93-111) after attempting eight or more in six of the last seven games.

Guards Matt Barr (Stratham, N.H./Cushing Academy) and Ferguson Duke (Dartmouth, N.S./Hun School (N.Y.)), who average 9.9 and 9.0 points respectively, are the two seniors who start for the Falcons.

Since the calendar switched to January, Le Moyne has managed to keep its streak alive despite a number of close games. Of the team's first five 2017 games, four were decided by four or less, or in overtime.

Le Moyne, in Patrick Beilein's second season as head coach, has been second in the NE10 in scoring defense (66.4), steals (6.2), blocks (3.7) and fewest turnovers (11.8), along with third in opponents' field goal percentage (.430).

The Dolphins have a balanced offensive attack with eight players averaging between 11.3 and 6.5 points. Topping the list is six-foot-six junior Isaiah Eisendorf, who has made 54 percent of his shot attempts and 12 of 27 three-pointers.

Junior guard Tanner Hyland, the team's number three scorer (10.4) is the younger brother of former Bentley two-time Academic All-America Keegan Hyland, who graduated last year.

Bentley will be on the road twice next week, playing at Saint Rose Wednesday and Southern Connecticut Saturday. Those two are tied for second in the Southwest, with Saint Rose owning a 16-4 overall record.
