Bentley Looks to Bounce Back Saturday against AIC

WALTHAM, Mass. – After falling in overtime at Adelphi University Wednesday, the Bentley University men's basketball team will be looking to earn its third win in its last four games, and avenge an earlier non-conference loss to American International College, when it hosts the Yellow Jackets Saturday afternoon at 3:30 pm. A free webcast will be available at www.bentleyfalcons.tv.

Bentley begins a stretch of three straight at the Dana Center, where they are 5-2 on the season, with records of 6-8 overall and 3-6 in the Northeast-10. AIC will make the trek from Springfield owning a 7-10 mark, including 1-8 NE-10.

Coach Jay Lawson's team has played consecutive overtime games for the first time since the 2004 postseason with the 88-82 loss to Adelphi following a 78-74 win over New Haven last Saturday.

Against the Panthers, Bentley overcame a 10-point second-half deficit and held a 74-71 lead before a late triple by six-foot-ten Manny Suarez (30 points, 11 rebounds) forced the extra session. By the time the final horn sounded, there had been ten ties and 11 lead changes in the only regular season meeting of the two teams.

Ironically, the score was also 88-82 when AIC shot past Bentley last month out in Springfield. Both teams connected a dozen times from three but the Yellow Jackets did so in ten less attempts, connecting at a 54.5 percent success rate from downtown.

Sophomore guard Ryan Richmond (Toronto, Ont./Thomson Collegiate) totaled 54 points for Bentley in the two OT games, raising his team-leading average to 19.8, fifth best in the NE10. He followed the 28 he put up against New Haven with 26 down on Long Island, the fourth time this season he's had at least that many.

The Falcons have also been receiving solid performances of late from junior Brandon Wheeler (Stamford, Conn./Trinity Catholic HS) and sophomore Zach Gilpin (Hampden, Maine/Hampden Academy). Wheeler leads Bentley in rebounding (8.4) in addition to scoring 11.5 a game, and Gilpin's scoring average is up to 11.4.

Wheeler has provided the Falcons with 14.8 points and 12 rebounds a game over the last four, including a 14-point, 17-rebound double-double in the first AIC game. Gilpin, over the last five, has shot 53 percent while averaging 16.2 points.

Senior guard Matt Barr (Stratham, N.H./Cushing Academy) is third in the NE10 in three-point accuracy with his norm of .493 bolstered by his performance against AIC last month. He scored a career-high 18 in that one while knocking down six of eight from deep.

AIC is just 11th in the conference in three-point accuracy at .358, but coach Andy Burkholder's team has the ability to heat up from three as they showed against the Falcons last month. That was one of four games in which they've made at least 50 percent of their long-distance shots.

AIC has four double-figure scorers with the list headed by sophomores Bruce Spruwell (13.3) and Jayvon Pitts-Young (13.0).  Pitts-Young erupted for 26 against Bentley in the earlier meeting, second to the 28 put up by senior guard Juwan Moody. Moody led the three-point barrage, connecting six times.

The current homestand will also see Bentley host Pace on Wednesday and Le Moyne next Saturday.
