Bentley Looks to Make it 3 Straight Wednesday at Adelphi

WALTHAM, Mass. – After pulling out an overtime victory over the University of New Haven on Saturday, the Bentley University men's basketball team will look to gain its third straight win when it plays at Adelphi University Wednesday night. The 7:30 pm game at the Center for Recreation and Sport will be webcast at www.aupanthers.tv.

Bentley, 6-7 overall and 3-5 Northeast-10, will be making its third attempt at a three-game winning streak, having come up short twice previously this season. It won't be an easy task as Adelphi with owning a 12-4 record, including 5-3 in the NE10 and 4-2 at home.

Sophomore guard Ryan Richmond (Toronto, Ont./Thomson Collegiate HS) was instrumental in the win over New Haven, finishing with 28 points including two free throws with four-tenths of a second left in regulation to force overtime. He also tacked on six points during the extra session as the Falcons recorded their tenth win in their last 11 overtime games.

Richmond, who was turnover-free for the third time in four games, elevated the conference's  fifth best scoring average to 19.3 ppg. He also provided seven rebounds for the second straight game, with his 5.8 average second on the team.

The rest of coach Jay Lawson's starting five joined him in double figures in the scoring column, including junior Brandon Wheeler (Stamford, Conn./Trinity Catholic HS) and sophomore Zach Gilpin (Hampden, Maine/Hampsen HS). Gilpin scored 12 and now has averaged 16 points in four games since making his first career start.  Wheeler filled the stat sheet with 11 points, seven rebounds and a career-best six assists.

Wheeler, Bentley's number two scorer at 11.0, leads the Falcons in rebounds (8.4), field goal percentage (.542), steals (15) and double-doubles (4). Also averaging at least nine points are Gilpin and senior guards Ferguson Duke (Dartmouth, N.S./Hun School (N.J.)) and Matt Barr (Stratham, N.H./ Cushing Academy).

Bentley will be facing the most prolific offensive team in the Northeast-10, one that has six players averaging in double figures.  The Panthers put up more than 89 points a game while ranking first in the NE10 in field goal percentage (.509) and fourth in both three-point and free throw accuracy. From outside the arc, Adelphi makes six more three-pointers a game than their opponents, averaging 11.3.

Coach Dave Duke has three of the top 11 scorers in the conference, a list headed by junior guard Michael Coffey at 20.9 points a game. Six-foot-five sophomore Jack Laffey follows at 18.8, and six-ten center Manny Suarez will bring averages of 17.0 points, 9.2 rebounds and 2.1 blocked shots into the contest.

Laffey and Coffey are 1-2 in the NE10 in three-pointers with 63 and 58, respectively. No one else in the 15-team conference has more than 46 entering this week's action.

After returning from Long Island, Bentley will play three straight at home, beginning Saturday against American International.
