Bentley Hosts Assumption Tuesday, Looking to Claim Win No. 4

WALTHAM, Mass. – Following an impressive win over the preseason favorite in the Northeast-10 Conference's Northeast Division , the Bentley University men's basketball team will look to continue the momentum when it hosts Assumption College Tuesday night at the Dana Center (7:30 pm, free webcast at www.bentleyfalcons.tv).

Hot shooting carried Bentley past the Ravens, 94-68, with the Falcons shooting 52 percent overall, making 11 of 21 from three-point land and knocking down 17 of 19 free throws. The win boosted the team to 3-1 overall and 1-1 NE-10.

Shooting like that has  been a familiar formula for success for coach Jay Lawson's team during the early portion of the new season. In the three wins, they've shot the ball at a .538 success rate overall and even better from downtown, .552 (37-67). In sharp contrast, Bentley connected at just a .423 clip, including only 7 of 27 from deep, in the lone loss, 68-61 to Merrimack last Wednesday.

Bentley has gotten a number of players involved during the first four games with four averaging in double figures in the scoring column and three others above 7.0 per game. Sophomore guard Ryan Richmond (Toronto, Ont./Thomson Collegiate HS) tops the list at 16.8 points per game. He's shown an ability to get to the line (17-19) and is also chipping in with 5.5 rebounds and 3.8 assists on average.

Also scoring in doubles are sophomore forward Kyle Bouchard (Houlton, Maine/Houlton Academy) at 11.3, senior guard Ferguson Duke (Dartmouth, N.S./Hun School (N.J.)) at 10.0 and junior forward  Brandon Wheeler (Stamford, Conn./Trinity Catholic HS) at 10.0. Wheeler has a .600 field goal percentage, Bouchard is at .581 and Duke has a .526 shooting mark in conference play.

Four players in Lawson's rotation are shooting over 50 percent from three with Bouchard (8/14) joined by sophomore wing Zach Gilpin (Hampden, Maine/Hampsden Academy), senior guard Matt Barr (Stratham, N.H./Cushing Academy) and freshman guard Seth Stankiewicz (Reading, Pa./Reading HS). Combined, the four are 28 of 48 so far.

Assumption will make the trip east undefeated in two conference games and 2-2 overall, After difficult losses to start the season (one by a point, the other in OT), the Greyhounds have won at Stonehill, 74-59, and topped St. Michael's at home, 82-78.

Five players currently own double-figure scoring averages with six-foot-seven sophomore Damien Rance leading the way at 19.8. He owns a .612 field goal percentage and has drilled seven of 14 three-pointers.

Senior forward Karl Ziegler missed the first two games but since returning, has given the Hounds 18 points a game with a .636 shooting mark. Guard Declan Soukup, also a senior, follows at 13.3 points per game.

Bentley swept Assumption last year, including an 83-81 win at the Dana Center in the most recent meeting.

The post-Thanksgiving portion of the schedule will get underway  Sunday with Bentley playing a 1 pm game in Orangeburg, N.Y. at Dominican College
