Bentley Continues Bid for Northeast-10 Championship with Semifinal vs. Stonehill

WALTHAM, Mass. – The Bentley University Falcons will look to continue their bid for a Northeast-10 Conference Men's Basketball Championship Wednesday night when they host a Stonehill College team that already owns a pair of victories over them this season. Tip-off at the Dana Center is 7 pm with a free webcast available at www.northeast10.tv.

Bentley, 20-7 after reaching the 20-win plateau for the eighth time in 12 years, used a 28-14 mid-game run to best Franklin Pierce, 86-71, in the quarterfinals on Sunday. A semifinalist  for the first time since 2011, the Northeast Division champion Falcon are assured of hosting Saturday's championship game if they are able to get by Stonehill by virtue of Southern New Hampshire's stunning come-from-behind win over Southern Connecticut State in the quarters.

Stonehill, 21-7 and the third seed, advanced with a 103-101 overtime win at Adelphi, a game in which both teams shot over 50 percent and the Skyhawks closed with six unanswered points over the final 93 seconds after being down four.

This will be the third straight month in which the first game for both clubs is against each other. The previous two didn't go well for the Falcons with Stonehill using a game-ending 36-14 for an 87-75 win at the Dana Jan. 2 and 16 three-pointers for a 92-71 home win Feb. 3.

Junior forward Ryan Logan and senior guard Carter Smith, a pair of Ohioans, led Stonehill in the two victories, each averaging 21 points, and the Skyhawks received a 27-point, 15-rebound effort from senior forward Pierce Cumpstone in the most recent contest.

Bentley grad student and 2015 CoSIDA Academic All-America® Keegan Hyland (South Portland, Maine/South Portland HS) came up big for the Falcons in the two games, shooting at a .679 success rate while averaging 24 points. Senior All-Northeast-10 forward Tyler McFarland (Rockport, Maine/Camden Hills HS) provided 25 points in the second meeting after being held to a season-low eight the first time the two met.

For the majority of the season, Hyland, McFarland and senior guard Alex Furness (Wells, Maine/Wells HS) have done the bulk of the scoring for the Falcons, combining for 57.5 of the team's 83.8 points per game. While they all made significant contributions in Sunday's quarterfinal win, including a 22-point, 10-rebound, 5-assists double-double by McFarland, they had considerable help from their teammates. The rest of the squad combined for 40 points on 60 percent shooting, including a career-best 19, nearly quadruple his season average, from sophomore forward Brandon Wheeler (Stamford, Conn./Trinity Catholic HS), who made eight of his nine two-point shots.

McFarland and Hyland are one of two pairs of 20-point scorers in the NE-10 with McFarland averaging 22.7 and Hyland 20.7, including 25.8 over the last 11 games. McFarland, with 2,052 career points, trails former Falcon standout Jason Westrol '10 by 16 for second on Bentley's all-time scoring list and is 18 field goals and seven field goal attempts away from taking possession of two school records owned by Westrol.

Hyland, over the last six-plus weeks, has made 42 three-pointers in 11 games while shooting about 47 percent from downtown. During that stretch, he's scored at least 20 nine times and recorded three double-doubles.

Furness has shot well from three all season with his .474 success rate 11th best nationally in Division II. He's third on the team in scoring at 14.1, and also averages 5.1 points and nearly three assists.

Rounding out the starting lineup for six-time NE-10 Coach of the Year Jay Lawson are Wheeler and junior guard Ferguson Duke (Dartmouth, N.S./Hun School (N.J.)). Duke averages 8.1 points and has only one turnover in the last four games (94 minutes). Wheeler's big game Sunday raised his season average to 5.4 and he's had at least five rebounds in 12 straight games.

Stonehill, which has won three straight, is second in the Northeast-10 in both three-point accuracy (.406) and scoring defense (72.2). The Skyhawk are coming off a 15-for-27 shooting performance from outside the arc at Adelphi and have averaged 12.4 three-pointers in their last eight, making .456 from deep during that stretch.

Logan and Smith lead the Skyhawks in scoring, averaging 17.9 and 16.1 respectively. Cumpstone follows at 14.4 and is the team's leading rebounder at 9.7. Senior guard Adam Bramanti owns a 10.1 scoring mark with nearly 70 percent of his points coming via the three.

It will be an all Northeast Division semifinal with the other pairing having second-seeded Saint Anselm hosting number four Southern New Hampshire in the first-ever NE-10 championship tournament meeting between the two intercity rivals.

Saturday's championship game, which carries an automatic berth into the NCAA East Regional, will be at 1 pm at the highest remaining seed.
