Bentley Puts 3-0 NE-10 Record on the Line vs. Southern N.H.

WALTHAM, Mass. -- Even though less than 20 percent of the scheduled Northeast-10 Conference regular season men's basketball games have been played, only one team remains with its conference record intact.

Bentley University, the lone remaining NE-10 unbeaten, will look to improve to 4-0 in conference action Saturday afternoon when the Falcons, 5-2 overall, host Southern New Hampshire University at 3:30 pm. A free webcast will be provided at www.bentleyfalcons.tv for those who can't attend.

SNHU will come into the game following a 91-56 thrashing of Assumption College Wednesday night. That win boosted the Penmen to 4-3 overall, including 1-2 NE-10. Two of the SNHU's wins came over the two clubs that own wins over the Falcons, Bridgeport and Holy Family.

On the other hand, one of the Penmen losses came at Saint Anselm, 76-58. Bentley is coming off an 86-78 win over the previously unbeaten Hawks in the first of a current three-game homestand,

Bentley senior forward Tyler McFarland (Rockport, Maine/Camden Hills HS) poured in 26 points in Wednesday's win with 16 of those coming as part of a 23-8 run over the first 6:30 of the second half that extended the Falcon lead from one to 16.

McFarland, who eclipsed the 1,600 career point mark in that game, leads the Northeast-10 in scoring with his 24.7 average 13th best nationally in Division II. The six-foot-five standout has connected 13 times from three in the last four games and has blocked at least two shots in every game to date.

Grad student Keegan Hyland (South Portland, Maine/South Portland HS) and senior guard Alex Furness (Wells, Maine/Wells HS) have each produced at least 19 ppg in the team's first three conference games while scoring over 14 a game overall. In NE-10 action, Hyland had a .595 field goal percentage and Furness has drained 12 of 22 from deep.

Junior guard Ferguson Duke (Dartmouth, N.S./Hun School (N.J.)) is the Falcons' fourth double figure scorer (10.3) and the team leader in effective field goal percentage (.720). He's shooting 56 percent overall and 52 percent from three, and is one of three Bentley players dealing three or more assists a game (Hyland and Furness are the others).

Southern New Hampshire, under veteran coach Stan Spirou, will come into the Dana Center as one of four NE-10 teams allowing less than 70 points a game. They've been successful in defending the three (.289 opponents' success rate with 6.2 allowed a game) and are number one in getting to the foul line (25.4 attempts per game).

The Penmen feature the quartet of senior Rodney Sanders, freshman Daquaise Andrews and juniors Chris Walters and Devin Gilligan. Sanders, a first-team All-Northeast-10 pick a year ago, is leading the team in scoring for the third straight year (17.0) as well as contributing 6.1 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 1.1 steals per game. His .570 field goal percentage includes an impressive 19 of 34 from beyond the arc.

Walters, after missing last season due to injury, leads the Penmen in rebounds (8.7) while scoring 15.7 a game. Gilligan follows at 13 points and 7.7 boards, and Andrews (12.6 ppg) has had a strong start to his rookie season. No one in the conference gets to the line more than Walters (7.3 a game) and both Gilligan and Andrews are in the top ten in that category.

Bentley will be looking for its first win over SNHU in two years after being swept by the Penmen last year, 84-67 and 85-73.

Prior to the game, former Bentley University standout and 2010 NABC Division II National Player of the Year Jason Westrol '10 will be recognized for his induction into the Northeast-10 Hall of Fame earlier this year.

The Falcons will also be at home Wednesday night for a 7 pm contest against Franklin Pierce.
